I have a new cover page. And if this is kind of bad, not my fault. Sorry this was out later than I promised but I’ve been really ill.
I guess I should start over, from the beginning of the day. I woke up so happy. Today is my birthday. I jumped out off my bed, ran to the bathroom. I began the morning rituals, such as; brushing my teeth, showering and doing my hair. My pace is quicker than normal. I felt optimistic. I felt as if I was on top of the world, as if nothing could put me down. I jogged downstairs to mom making breakfast and nana feeding Joy. They turned to me instantly and smiled.
“Good morning dear. What do you want for breakfast, birthday girl?” mom asked.
“Um, how about pancakes?” I asked hopefully. Mom just smiled.
“You must be psychic because that’s what I’m making now.”
I smiled back and sat down, waiting. When mom served the pancakes, she asked me; “So, what are you doing today?”
I thought about it for a moment and replied; “I don’t know, just hanging out at home.”
Nana tutted. “You have to do something this is your first day as a teenager. Go out with some of your girl friends. Shop, get your hair done, that sort of thing.”
“I didn’t think of that.” I said honestly. Me and the twins, Helena and Hannah, had became very good friends. They are a year younger than me but I could still talk to them about a lot of things. Both of their parents worked in the same hospital that I first saw them in. Their dad is the doctor who talked to me after my siblings’ birth. I called the twins to see if they were able to go out. They were in the hospital when I saw them because of an accident. Both of them fell off a cliff near the sea. Helena suffered most of the damage. Her right arm had been broken in two places. But both of them had a lot of scars covering their faces.
Luckily, their mom said yes, however, only if she could take us. Their mom was really protective of them, especially after the accident. I got dressed quickly and combed my hair. It had gotten long recently. I was thinking of having it cut. If it gets too long, I have problems managing it. I took one good look of myself. Almost everyone at school called me ugly. I don’t think that. I think I look average. I mean, no one is really ugly; it’s just how everyone else perceives you. “Kristen, Hannah and Helena are here!” mom shouted up the stairs.
I ran downstairs, taking care not to fall down and saw the twins and their mom.
“Hey, guys.” I said happily.
“Happy birthday!” they both said in unison.
That really freaks me out.
“Ready?” Helena asked.
“Yep, bye everyone.” I waved to my family and we walked out the door. Whilst in the car we talked about the normal stuff. Make-up, boys and clothes.
I kind of zoned out while they talked about boys. No boy has ever taken an interest in me and I don’t really care. I have the rest of my life to find someone. We arrived at the boutique. Helena tried on a lovely dress, it really suited her. Hannah tried on long skirt and a strap top. I tried on a pair of faded jean and a grudge top. I couldn’t care for fashion and I don’t mind what I wear. “Kristen, that isn’t very fashionable.” Helena chided.
“Meh. As long as I can wear it, I don’t mind.” I breathed.
I decided to not buy it. Hannah and Helena bought their clothes and we made our way to the hairdressers. I went first, considering the length of my hair.
I took one of the hairdresser and giggled internally.
They had good hairstyles but they sure didn’t have good fashion sense. It turned out better than I hoped. Sure, it looked a mess but I liked it. I was never one for style. To be honest, it made me look more mature. More grownup. That’s what I wanted. I didn’t want to look like a child anymore, but I also wanted to look young. Hannah and Helena looked beautiful after their makeovers.
Even though they were twins you could tell who they were. ~~~~~~ The twin’s mom said it was time for me to go home. I looked at my watch. For the love of God, it’s only 1 o’clock in the afternoon. Did she really want to get rid of me? When I walked through the front door of my house I got the biggest surprise of my life.
“Happy birthday Kristen!” everyone yelled.
Tears welled up in my eyes. My friends were here. Tommy and Connor were both cheering for me.
I finally realised. The twins were used as decoys to distract me while they set up my party. “Come on, blow out your candles.” Tommy beamed.
I smiled at him. Tommy and Connor are older than me by a couple of months. So they had their birthdays earlier.
I didn’t know what to ask for. I had everything.
I wish for happiness.
I blew them out. I think I grew up quite nicely. But one thing that questions me is that Tommy looked strange when I looked at him. His eyes were wide and when I looked at him he blushed and looked away.
I wonder what’s wrong.
It was time to open my presents. Hannah and Helena bought me a make-up set. I was happy about that. But I would mainly like to use the dark colours.
Connor bought me a joke book. I should’ve known.
Tommy was reluctant to give me his present. It was a book about the arts through the ages.
“Wow! Thanks Tommy.” I said cheerily.
He blushed even more. Why would he be so uncomfortable around me? We’ve been friends for years. We all spent time just mucking about. We all went swimming and played marco polo. Connor even managed to push Tommy in the pool.
I haven’t had this much in my entire life. I never want this to end.
But our parents sat on the deck chairs. Unfortunately, time flies by when you’re having fun.
I had to say goodbye to everyone.
Me and Tommy were a bit awkward. He kept quiet for most of the time.
I would need to talk to him on my own.
I waved goodbye to everyone. “Oh, dear. I need to go to the shops to buy some nappies.” mom said whilst running down the stairs.
I laughed internally. My mom would make such a fuss about the smallest things.
“Kristen, make sure your nana takes her medication.” she lectured.
Nana has to take some medicine because she’s really ill. Me and mom don’t know what’s wrong but I have a feeling that nana knows exactly what’s wrong. She kissed me goodbye and ran out of the door.
I leaned back against the wall. I felt something was going to go wrong.
But ignored it. I wandered into the living room and saw my nana watching the news.
“Nana, have you taken your medication?” I asked.
“Not yet.” she replied.
I looked at her like I was the parent and she was the child.
“Okay, I’ll go now.” She got up and waltzed into the kitchen. I watched to make sure.
I don’t know what happened to me over the last couple of years. I’ve matured a lot.
I guess with living with my mom and nana for the last year and two little siblings made me grow up quicker. She came back in and we watched TV. It was 10 o’clock and mom still wasn’t home. How long does it take to pick up nappies if you have a car?
A sudden ringing made me jump it was the phone. Nana slowly got up and answered it.
“Hello, yes, this is Tilly Samson. What? No! It’s not possible.” her voice sounded painful. What was so bad that made her cry? My mind turned to dark thoughts. “What will happen to them? At least they’re staying with me. Yes, I’ll be over soon.” Nana hung up the phone. Tears were falling down her face.
“K-Kristen, your mom is dead. She died half an hour ago.”
My world was turned upside down.
“What? No, it wasn’t her. They got the wrong person.” I couldn’t breathe. Tears were now running down my face.
“I’m afraid it was her, the person in the car was her. But I have to go down to the morgue to identify her. I need you to stay with the twins. I’ll call Lina to come over and babysit.” she sounded so calm.
I just couldn’t take it anymore. I ran upstairs to my room.
I collapsed on my bed. The dreams I had as a child, were now true. She was dead. My world had now come tumbling down. I felt void inside.
My brother and sister would never know their mother. What if Leo came back to reclaim us? I knew there was a small chance he wouldn’t because he would never do that. If he didn’t want me, why would he want the twins? I was so emotionally drained. I gave in to the darkness that surrounded me. I woke up to the sound of crying. It was a baby’s cry. I ran to Zack’s room first and to my surprise it was him. I walked instantly to his crib and picked up the screaming infant. He was growing rapidly. He had been so small as a newborn. Now him and Joy were growing swiftly. I held the weeping infant close. From that moment, I remembered the promise I made to them as newborns. I promised I would never let anyone hurt them. I now made a new promise. I would never let them get separated from me or each other. No matter what happens I will always be with them. The next few days were like a blur to me. Nana pulled me out of school for a few days, luckily it was the last week of the year and I was allowed to be off for the rest of the week.
The thing I remembered most was my mom’s funeral. People I never knew were there. They came over to condole me and my nana. For the first couple of weeks of the school holiday, I visited my mom’s grave every day. I went there to talk to mom about anything. I missed her so much. She was the person who I wanted to be most like. The thought of never seeing her again brought tears to my eyes. I hated this. I felt alone for the first time in my life. I knew I had people to rely on but now I feel so alone.
The next time you’ll see me is my first day of high school. Goodbye.
I don't know when the next update will be. I've been really ill lately and I've been in and out of the doctors for the last month.
