Description
Melusine is the daughter of a Wyvern who ran off on her Rhine Maiden (mermaid) mother centuries ago, and as such is an aquatic fusion of fish and reptile. Melusine is very secretive and a bit ashamed of her heritage, and tends to hide out in her enchanted castle away from the peering and ofttimes cruel eyes of men, who might abuse her and her gifts. Will she ever find the one who can love her as she is, and not repeat the mistakes of her mother?

Melusine is an old Medieval French fairy tale translated into German and then English in the 1500s, about a King from Scotland who comes across a beautiful woman in the forests who agrees to be his bride on the condition that he never look upon her while she bathes or gives birth. She gives birth to triplets some time before he breaks this vow and makes the woman, now revealled in her true form to be a fairy, flee back to her homeland in Avalon, with their children in tow. For years the four live in Avalon (resting place of King Arthur, yes) until Melusine asks why they are under self-imposed exile. Her mother explains what her father did, and seeking revenge Melusine goes back to her father and locks him in a castle for mistreating her mother. But Melusine's mother doesn't feel vindicated, and angry with Melusine for disrespecting her father she curses her daughter to become a monstrous aquatic serpentine creature every Saturday. Like her mother she is found later in a forest by a young man who also vows to wed her so long as he does not break the same vow of privacy on Saturdays, but when he (of course) does and sees her true form, Melusine forgives her husband -- until a future spat leads him to openly insulting his wife in front of their drinking guests, calling her a 'serpent' and exposing her secret to everyone. Ashamed, Melusine becomes a dragon and flies off, leaving her enchanted wedding rings behind, and is never seen again.
I did not make ANY of that up.
I chose Rheintocher as her surname because in German it means Daughter of the Rhine (river), or Rhinemaiden, water nymphs from Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle opera about mermaid-like creatures in possession of a magical ring that causes a LOT of problems for the men who seek the treasure of the Rhine Gold.
