Obsessed with violating the laws of nature, scientist Henry Frankenstein constructs a creature from the dead. Once jolted to life, the creature proves even more human than his creator...The woman they both love, Elizabeth, has a choice before her..will she become the "Bride of Frankenstein?" It has been a couple of days since the fateful fire at the old abondoned castle, Elizabeth is back home at her parent's lush estate. Alone in her room, she sadly recalled the tragic events leading up to 'James' demise...could she have said or done more to avoid such a fate for him? Elizabeth is feeling quite miserable...Her feelings are awash in confusion... Meanwhile, Henry Frankenstein is back at his home. He has tried in vain to see Elizabeth, to explain his side of things, but she refused to see him. He is truly stumped why Elizabeth is acting so. Surely she did not have feelings for that abomination? The very thought was abhorent to Henry...he dismisses the thought immediately... Henry keeps himself busy at his laboratory. He truly does not see what it is he has done wrong. His thoughts are filled with how he brought his creature to life. What possibly went amiss to turn the monstrosity into a killer and kidnapper? Henry considers himself totally blameless...it was the science that was flawed... Henry is still fascinated with the scientific ramifications of life and death. He puzzled over the procedures he followed; perhaps it was the brain he obtained from the University, or the body itself. Yes, Henry was still probing into issues that should be well left alone....he reasoned he would correct the flawed science, and maybe....try again..... As for James, he did not die in the fire as all had surmised. That afternoon in a weakened and scorched condition; with most of his clothes had burned away, James appeared on Elizabeth's balcony outside her bedroom. She is indeed startled, and cried out in shock. James immediately collapsed from pain and exhaustion. She did not know where she found the strength; but Elizabeth managed to assist James into the attic, well out of sight of her parents. She cleaned the dirt and soot from his body, and bandaged the few burn marks on his torso. She kept a vigil while he slept, watching over James very closely. She smiled slightly. She was truly relieved James had not died. In fact, her heart had leapt at seeing him. For now, he had to recover, and no one must know of his existence. She nodded to herself, she would keep James here in the attic away from prying eyes, especially Henry's! Some hours have passed, James finally awakes. He slowly and painfully gets out of bed.
Elizabeth leapt out of her chair. "You should not be out of bed, you are not well!" she cried worriedly. "Really James, please go back to bed...I am afraid I must insist!" "You...you have been looking after me?" James asked weakly.
Elizabeth smiled brilliantly. "Of course James, I would do anything for you, surely you must know that..." James quickly grabbed Elizabeth and kissed her tentatively and gently. It was something he has wanted to do since the first time he saw her.
Even though the lips felt cold, Elizabeth did not shrink away, she embraced James warmly and affectionately. She did have to admit it to herself, she had feelings, perhaps deep feelings for James. James returned her embrace with gratitude and love. Someone cared for him, that is all that mattered in this cruel world. His tears began to flow. This woman meant everything to him, he loved her with his heart and soul. He pledged silently to himself that he would ensure no harm ever come to his darling Elizabeth...not now, not ever... The next day, Elizabeth came into the parlour. Her mother sat reading a book. "My dear! Finally you have emerged from your bedroom! Really, it is not healthy to take to one's rooms like that."
Elizabeth sighed. "I have been through an ordeal mother, a little rest will not do me any harm." "Yes, 'your ordeal'...which you will not discuss with either me or your father! Nor will you see Henry! Are you aware he has been here everyday asking after your well-being? Why won't you see him, he is your fiance!"
"Not anymore mother...I want nothing to do with Henry Frankenstein. And you can tell him so next time he is here!" Elizabeth said firmly. "I do not understand! Elizabeth please, I am your mother! I want to help you! You haven't been the same since you were freed, what on earth was done to you?" Scarlett Brickstone said worriedly.
Elizabeth began to get a little agitated. "Yes, I was kidnapped, by someone who had good reason to hold a grudge against Henry. I will not go into details, Henry is entirely at fault! And nothing was 'done' to me, I was treated very well, honestly mother!!" Hannah cried, exasperation in her voice. Scarlett looked at her daughter incredulously. "Perhaps it is a good thing your father and I are going out for the day, you are in a foul temper and not good company at all. You never used to speak to me in that tone before. I am hurt."
Hannah's mother turned and left the room. Elizabeth very quickly regretted her argument with her mother, she would apologize later. But for now, she would go tell James they would have the house to themselves! Elizabeth informed James of her parents afternoon excursion, soon he was walking about the large home, to get some exercise and build his strength when he spotted a piano in the parlour.
He sat and began to play a lush concerto...how he missed playing his music. He closed his eyes and was suddenly in another world, a world where he was accepted and loved. Elizabeth heard the music from the next room, she quietly came into the parlour and listened to the piece. It moved her deeply, she felt tears forming in the corner of her eyes, just like the first time she heard James play. When it was over she applauded loudly. "James! That was the most wonderful piece of music! I have never heard it before!" Elizabeth cried happily.
James smiled. "I wrote it...I wrote it for you. I call it "Elizabethean Sonnet". he said quietly.
Elizabeth was deeply moved. "You wrote it, for me? It is beautiful, exquisite..."
"Like you, my dear Elizabeth..." James said with great emotion. At this moment, he never loved Elizabeth more. Some minutes before this exchange, Henry arrived at the Brickstone home to try and see Elizabeth once again. Something made him stop...that music...where had he heard it before? He knew Elizabeth did not play that well, nor her parents...was there a concert pianist visiting? The music drew Henry close, he was at the door, listening...he did not ring the bell, but rather was swept up in the music. He was jarred suddenly back into reality; for as soon as the music stopped, he saw through the door sidelight; Elizabeth...with that monstrosity! He Lives! Of course, the creature was playing the music! Henry could not believe his eyes! Henry was frozen in his tracks. He felt his blood boil as it had never done before. 'Elizabeth was embracing that...that...thing!! How could she! She has betrayed me!'
If Henry despised the creature before, now it was an intense and serious hatred. Henry began to slowly back away. His eyes burned with malice. He would get his revenge....This time he would ensure the creature is destroyed!
Henry left, without letting on to anyone what he had seen.
Henry went back to his lab..his anguish and intense anger was overwhelming. His hatred burned deep and it was affecting his already fragile mind. He cursed the creature and Elizabeth...he screamed obsenities, he vowed to make them both pay.... A storm was starting to brew outside, thunder rumbled dangerously in the distance. But it could not match the storm in Henry's soul. If he couldn't destroy the creature, he would create something that could, and this time...he would be more cautious and exact in the science...yes....he must begin work right away..... Henry did not waste another minute, as soon as darkness fell, he went out and dug up another body. He learned it was the body of a murderer, a cruel vicious man with the brain of a simpleton...ideal for Henry's purposes. 'This creature...' he reasoned. 'I will be able to control, it will do my bidding!'
Henry laughed miniacally... The days clicked by, Henry worked around the clock, his hatred spurning him onward...he was making amazing progress...the creature would be ready soon....and then Henry will have his revenge! It has been a little over a week, James is still safely stowed away upstairs in the small attic room.
He has regained almost all of his strength, and as he rests in the damp, musty room, he wonders what he will do next...he cannot stay hidden here forever...and what will become of him and Elizabeth? He is almost afraid to profess his deep love for her, lest she be afraid, or worse, horrified. Elizabeth managed to slip away and came into the tiny, cramped room. James was intensely involved in reading a book. He had read numerous books since being cloistered away in the attic.
Elizabeth cleared her throat. "James, we need to talk..." "Yes Elizabeth, we do...you and I know I am better, I cannot stay here indefinitely. I must find someplace of my own, a corner of the world where I can be alone, where no one can interfere with me. I just want to live in peace. I have to come to terms with what I am...and deal with it." James said soberly. The thought of James leaving suddenly made her sad. "No, I say you are not better! You are still in a weakened condition! You must stay James...I am afraid I must insist on this!" Elizabeth cried worriedly.
James looked at Elizabeth skeptically. "My health is not the reason you want me to stay Elizabeth..." Elizabeth watched the candles flicker in the dark room. "I am sure I don't know what you mean. What other possible reason can there be?"
James said quietly. "Perhaps you care for me too much for me to leave, perhaps it is even the word that we have never spoke of to each other...love..." "I.....don't know what my feelings are...I am very fond of you..." Elizabeth's voice trailed off helplessly.
James sat down on the bed, dejected and heartsick. It was as he feared. He never should have mentioned the word love, even in passing. Not now. "Please go and leave me alone..." he whispered hoarsely.
A confused Elizabeth left the room. Alone in his misery, the room grew dark around him. It matched his feelings and mood. Blackness swirled about him. James' deep and abiding love for Elizabeth was not returned...he now knew where he stood, and it cut deeply. How foolish to think a woman as beautiful as Elizabeth would ever have passionate feelings for someone like him...a walking corpse...stitched together death....
James fought the urge to scream.... Elizabeth went outside to get a breath of air and to think. and clear her mind. But she did not get much of a chance, for Henry walked up to her.
He smiled slyly, "I have been trying to see you everyday for almost two weeks! And what is this nonsense about wanting nothing to do with me?" "Using your mother to deliver messages, really Elizabeth, how crass. Well, I am here now, I would like to know what I did that was so terrible. I still want you to become my wife..."
Elizabeth sighed exasperately. "Oh go away Henry! I am not in the mood to deal with you now! But hear this before you go, I will never marry you, I no longer love you, and I will not discuss the reasons...not with you!" "Oh I can guess the reasons!" Henry thundered. "You fell for that walking death and his so-called sensitive side. Well let me enlighten you on a small fact...why do you think the Dragoons were after him? They wanted to question him on a double murder, a young couple found in the woods! So I am glad he is dead...justice was served!" Henry lied smoothly. Elizabeth threw up her hands in shock. "I don't believe you! James would never do something so horrible! How dare you say such a thing!"
Henry scoffed. "James is it? You gave that corpse an actual name? Elizabeth, you are a deluded, stupid girl! I gave you credit for more brains, apparently I was mislead in thinking you intelligent!" Elizabeth stared calmly at Henry. "Go away Henry and never return. You are a hateful, spiteful man, I want nothing more to do with you. Go now."
Henry's menacing eyes narrowed. "I gave you a chance to correct your mistake. Now you will regret it." Henry turned on his heel and left an even more confused Elizabeth. ( if that were possible) Still quivering in anger and hate, Henry rush back to his lab to put the finishing touches on his monster. He gave Elizabeth a chance and she refused. Now she would pay, both her and her pet corpse...Henry did some last minute stitching. The monster was almost ready. Henry has developed a new, better way to shock the monster to life...he built a contraption that harnesses the powers of the wind and the sun to operate it. He strapped the monster into the chair, and calibrated the machinery. With a flick of the switch the red light swirled, and shocks of electricity bolted through the monster's body, over and over.... After what seemed an eternity, the monster began to move in the chair...his hand slowly went to his forehead....he was in a lot of pain..he grunted and growled...and tried to get his bearings. Slowly the monster stood. It looked blankly about the room. Henry smiled slightly in satisfaction. It was a success! "Nod your head if you understand what I am saying..." Henry said.
The monster's massive head slowly bobbed up and down. "Good. Now, I am your master and you will obey me in all things...understand?"
The head again slowly nodded. Henry had created another monster! Back at the Brickstone estate, Elizabeth cannot digest what Henry has told her about James. If true, it is horrific indeed. She immediately went back up to the attic room and confronted James with Henry's accusation.
James was quiet for some moments. "It was an accident....I only wanted to quiet them--they were screaming you see, I did not know my own strength..." "I never would have believed it...I told Henry he was a liar....how could you...you ARE a monster!" Elizabeth cried. The look of anger and disgust was clear.
Her words cut James very deep. "Do you not think I have been tortured with guilt and remorse since it happened? It haunts my thoughts daily...I will leave when it becomes dark...you shall never see me again." he murmured sadly. Elizabeth turned on her heel and flounced out of the room. Tears had formed in Elizabeth's eyes, she had to talk to someone. She decided to go and see her father in his study. All her life she found she could talk easily and confide in her dear father more so than her mother. Perhaps he could give her advice....she was thoroughly perplexed with regard to her feelings. "Father, I am sorry to disturb you, but I need your wise council...I have deep feelings for someone, but I have found out he has done something terrible, he has broken the laws of society...he has broken my heart as well....I do not know what to do..." Elizabeth said, her voice quivering with confused emotion. "My dear daughter, are you speaking of Henry?" Lionel Brickstone asked.
"No, my feelings for Henry are quite resolved. I told him I never want to see him again. I speak of another...it..it is the one who kidnapped me. He is not like any other man..in so many ways he is both good and bad I am afraid. I do not know how to describe him to you..." "No man is perfect my dear...we all do things we regret in life. You have to ask yourself, can you find it in you heart to forgive this man? Can you trust him in the future?" Lionel asked firmly.
Elizabeth thought a moment. "I am not sure...Oh father, I am so confused!"
"Then ask yourself truthfully, do you love him? Do you want to spend the rest of you life with him?" Lionel urged. Elizabeth did not get a chance to respond, for the newly-created monster burst noisily into the study. He growled and grunted feriously, Lionel was horrified by the sight of the monster.
"Elizabeth! Run!" Lionel screamed. The monster turned, and with one blow of the back of his hand, sent Lionel flying against the wall. He fell to the floor, unconscious.
"Leave him alone!" Elizabeth screamed. "Father! Father!" Her mind as a whirl. Elizabeth was terrified beyond belief. The Monster reached for Elizabeth. She began screaming at the top of her lungs. "James! James! Help! James!"
He flung Elizabeth over his shoulder and ran from the study and out the front door. Though James was four floors above the study, he snapped awake immediately from his nap. What was that racket? And was that Elizabeth screaming? James did not hesitate, he could not stay hidden any longer...he immediately ran down the stairs. Hang it all if someone saw him, his beloved was in danger! James ran in the direction of the racket. He ran frantically into the study to find an older man, unconscious on the floor. This must be Elizabeth's father! James dropped to his knees. He could tell by some of the broken bits and pieces in the room that a struggle has ensued. Elizabeth has been taken...and he knew deep in his soul Henry Frankenstein was behind it...James quietly cursed Henry. Lionel sat up slowly, his whole body was aching from the massive blow against the wall. He shook his head and tried to focus.. He could hardly believe his eyes when he saw someone standing over him...who looked almost as frightening as the thing that took Elizabeth. James reached down and gently assisted the elderly man to his feet. Lionel looked into the man's eyes, he saw no malice or intent of violence. The man's face was registering deep concern.
"Who took Elizabeth...was it Henry?" James asked.
It began to dawn on Lionel.."You are the person of whom Elizabeth spoke...my God..." Lionel shook his head in disbelief. "No..it was someone who looked very similar to you as a matter of fact...why would it be Henry?" Lionel cried. James closed his eyes and sighed deeply. "I do not have time to explain any further, Mr. Brickstone...Please be assured I will find Elizabeth and return her to you safely...you have my word...for what it is worth..."
James turned and ran from the house....In the distance he could hear Elizabeth's terrified screams...he wasn't far behind.... The monster quickly delivered Elizabeth to Henry in his lab. "Well Elizabeth, here you are..I suppose we could have caused a scene at your home, but I want...what was the name you gave it? 'James' to come here...to be in my domain." Henry saw the look of concern on Elizabeth's face. "Do not distress yourself, you are here merely as bait. Nothing more...unless you have changed your mind, and will be come the bride of Frankenstein..or perhaps this creature appeals to you, you seem to have a soft spot for the walking dead..." Henry laughed cruelly.
He turned to the monster. "Why don't you give her a kiss, to show how sensitive you are?" he sneered. Never one to hide her emotions, Elizabeth felt her stomach wretch at Henry's sick suggestion. This was beyond the pale! "You have gone mad, Henry...totally insane! You are lost...I feel nothing but pity for you now..."
The monster made one step toward Elizabeth, she backed away in horror and disgust. The monster grunted...gutteral sounds emitted from his throat..he was angry and upset, like James, he did not take rejection very well at all...finally the monster managed to spat out three words..."She...hate....ME!" Moments later, James could be heard downstairs, yelling Elizabeth's name frantically. Henry began to rub his hands together in anticipation...at last, he would get his revenge on his creation...and destroy him utterly!!
"Go ahead Elizabeth...call for him!" Henry laughed. In a flash James was up the stairs and burst into the lab, Elizabeth immediately ran to him..crying hysterically. "Leave James! Henry intends you harm! Go at once, go for God's sake!"
James held her close and murmured lovingly, "I will not go without you...not ever..."
Henry watched the tender exchange angerily. The monster also watched, he had a peculiar look on his scarred face....almost as if he were moved very deeply...
James and Elizabeth parted, their emotions and feelings very clear on their faces.
Henry made gagging noises. "Oh this is too much! You honestly think you have any future with this walking death Elizabeth? I cannot take anymore..Monster!!" Henry cried. "Destroy him, now!!" The creature looked at Henry...then he looked at Elizabeth and James. He could not do it...he could not destroy something as beautiful as the feelings they obviously have for each other. He looked at Henry again, taking note of the hate, malice and vengance clear on his creator's face. The monster made a desicion.... The monster lurched toward Henry, a deep growl rumbling in his chest. Henry backed up. "Not me you imbecile! Him!" he pointed at James. "Stupid idiot...obey me!"
But the creature kept walking toward Henry, his slow, heavy tread reverberated menancingly on the stone floor..."Arrrrgh!" The monster cried. Suddenly the monster stopped, he turned toward James, a look of sadness and regret in his vacant eyes...some sounds rumbled in the monster's throat...finally he managed to say,
" Go now.....LIVE...."
The monster turned back toward Henry and quickly grabbed him, holding him firmly...
The Monster hooked up himself and Henry to the machine..Henry cried, "Stop you fool! What are you doing?"
The Monster looked at Henry blankly and said in a flat emotionless tone..."We...belong....DEAD..."
The monster threw the switch.... Tens of thousands of volts of electricity rolled through thier bodies, both Henry and the Monster screamed in agony...the smell of toasting flesh filled the lab...it is indeed, horrific to see...
James cannot do anything...it is too late.
Elizabeth cried, "Henry! Henry!" Elizabeth covers her eyes, she cannot watch the grizzly scene...the room is alive with the crackle of electricity. James on the other hand cannot look away...he watches with a mix of emotions as Henry and the monster are electrocuted...and fall to the floor..their lives extinquished.
"Come Elizabeth...I will return you to your parents.." James said quietly. He gently led Elizabeth away from the horror and back to her home. Elizabeth's parents came down the stairs of their estate to greet their daughter at he arrival.
"Elizabeth! We were so worried!!" Scarlett Brickstone cried. She froze when she saw who accompanied her daughter. "Dear heaven, what is that?" she screamed.
Lionel quieted his wife. "Leave her be, Elizabeth is a young woman, leave her to make up her own mind..." "You are home safe," James said quietly. 'I brought you home unharmed as I promised your father...now I must go."
Elizabeth felt tears cluster in the corner of her eyes..."Where will you go? Will I ever see you again?" she cried helplessly.
James stared at Elizabeth, his face dark with sadness. "No...you will never see me again...Good-bye my beloved, I shall love you always..." James began to walk away. Elizabeth watched James...her heart was beating loudly...all at once, the fog began to lift from her confusion. Yes, she knew it now, she cared not who or what he his or what he may have done... all she knew is she cannot live without him, she loved him, deeply, completely without regret. She looked over at her father..Lionel smiled and nodded.
"JAMES!!!!!" Elizabeth screamed passionately. She began to run after him....
She ran and leaped into his arms. "Do not leave without me, I could not bear it...take me with you! Oh James...please forgive me, I love you so!" Elizabeth sobbed onto his shoulder.
James smiled..he was never so happy, Elizabeth loved him...someone actually loved him, and isn't that all we really want in this life?
