This is chapter 6. I hope you like it. (:
"It's time to present your assignment to the class; who would like to go first?"
Everyone was silent.
"Anyone? Anyone at all?" he asked again.
Still, nobody said a word. "Well, alright then. I'll just have to choose. Nicky and his partner Kels?"
"Kels is out sick, today," Nicky said, laughing. They probably just didn't finish it, so she decided to stay home, not wanting to show her face.
"Fine, then, someone else," he looked around the room, until his eyes locked on me. "Ms. Weston? Is your partner here?"
"Yes, sir," I nudged Cody, who was talking to some guy in the seat all the way across the room from him. He looked up.
"Oh, yes. We can go first," He replied, getting up out of his seat. We walked to the front of the room, where Cody stood tall and smiled. I just stood there, it's not like I could do much else. I didn't do the assignment with him, and I forgot to call him to get the details of it.
It's okay, Mia. All you have to do is stand here and look interested.. Or, involved... I smiled as Cody went on about Sonia Defberson and her life. How she discovered Riverblossom Hills, what happened after she did, and how her legacy still lives on. I even added in the names of her children.
Yeah, that'll definitely look like you are participating! Good job, Mia! I told myself. Once Cody finished, Professor James stared at us for a few seconds.
"Very good," he finally said, breaking his silence. "But I have one question."
"What is that?" Cody asked.
He turned to me. "Ms. Weston, did you help with this assignment?"
I turned to him. "Well..." "Well? Did you help with the assignment, or not? It's a simple yes or no question."
I looked down at my feet. Cody kept saying yes, until Professor James shushed him.
"Honestly, no. He did the assignment last night and I was.. Occupied with something else so I just went home." "Very well. Cody, you get a B. Mia, you get an F," he said. "Now, go take your seats so someone who actually did their assignment can come up here and present it."
We watched three assignments before the class ended, and all I did was feel guilty. I should have helped him. What kind of partner doesn't help out on the biggest project in the class?
After class, Professor James asked to see me. I walked up to his desk, slowly, watching my feet as I took the next step. What could he possibly have to say to me, now?
"Ms. Weston. Now, I usually don't do this, but.. You remind me a lot of myself when I was in college," Really? "So, I'm going to give you until tomorrow to present another project. If you don't have it in and presented by tomorrow morning, I'm afraid you're going to fail my class."
I looked up at him and smiled. "Thank you so much! I'll definitely have it in, I promise!" "Thanks for letting me come in late, Madison. I really needed to get that assignment done," I said.
"No problem, sweetheart. I'm making omelets, would you like one?" "At three o'clock in the afternoon?" I asked.
"Ain't no time limit on when you can eat yourself some omelets!" Madison smiled.
"Well, in that case, I'd love one." I smiled. I could really use some lunch after that assignment, anyway. "So, how're you doing? You look a little down. And don't tell me it's 'cause that assignment," she said, mixing the ingredients.
"I'm fine... It's just, yesterday I lost my best friend. She lied to me, then told a secret she promised me she'd never tell. Something I told her because I was so mad about, I had to let someone else know. Now the entire college campus knows about it.."
"Now, don't you think that's just a bit dramatic? I highly doubt the entire campus knows about it. I mean, there's a lot of people on campus," Madison joked. "In all seriousness, though, I bet your friend is a great person. You seem as if you care about her a lot." I nodded. "Well, I hope you two work it out. I hate to see friendships go down the drain 'cause of one thing. Even if it is a big thing. One day, you'll work it out with her." "Thanks, Madison. I hope your right."
Madison walked over and put the plate with the amazing looking omelette in front of me. "And how many times do I have to tell you, call me Maddie."
"Okay, Maddie," I smiled and took a bite of my food. "Whoa, this is great!" "My momma's secret recipe. Lord bless her soul," she said. "My children love it. Everytime I miss them, I make myself an omelette."
"I'm guessing you miss them, now?"
"Oh, I miss them every moment of every day. I know they gotta go off and be adults, but it's so hard to watch my babies grow up and do their own thing. I guess right now I'm missing them more than anything. Most of the time, I don't even notice I do it until the plate is sitting right in front of me." She chuckled. "You got any family you're missing, right now, Mia?"
"My mom and my dad. And my little brother, Lukas. He's gonna be fifteen this November. I miss him, so much. He starting high school this year, and I probably won't be there to see it, since I have my own obligations." Maddie smiled. "High school is the worst!" She said. "Count your self lucky you won't have to be there!" She joked.
"Don't worry, hon. You'll get to see him, soon. I bet cha that."
She looked over at me and smiled. "Now how about that lesson?" We rode until dawn. Acer is really starting to get used to me, and I'm starting to get used to him. After I got done at the farm, I decided to pop in and surprise Timothy. I just wanted to show him that I'm still there for him. That I'm not mad at him. I just miss him, I guess. I entered the dorm.
Hey, this is the same dorm Cody lives at. How did I not notice, yesterday?
I walked into his door, not preparing myself for what I was walking in on... ................. I looked at the scene in front of me, running out of the room as fast as I could. I could even hear the curses and yelling for me. I thought I heard "sorry's," too, but I didn't care. I just ran. Thoughts flowing through my head. How could he do this to me? How could Baylee do this to me? She sat there, in the circle yesterday, and said she was cheating with someone. How could I have been so blind to know who she was talking about? I should have known. Especially the way he looked at her when he first saw her. Like she was the only girl in the world. He never looked at me that way.. I knew he wasn't happy, but I didn't know it went that far.. I ran, ran for what seemed like miles. I ran up until I reached the Quad center. When I got there, I just collapsed. How could four years of happiness be ruined by one scene? Is that even possible? I just sat there, tears slowly falling down my face.
I don't know how you're going to pick yourself up from this one, Mia. "So this is where Posey started," I pointed to one point of the map, "and this is where she ended." "In all reality, she had a special reason for sailing across the entire world, she wanted to feel something she's never felt before. The wind in her hair, the sand in her feet.. She wanted to be able to sail across the world with the man she loved by her side." I cringed at the word love.
"Well, Mia. That was, good. Especially for just a days work. You get a C for my class." I smiled, and made my way back to my seat as class was dismissed. Cody stopped me in my tracks.
"That was great," he said. "Why have you been ignoring my calls, though?"
"You know exactly why," I snapped.
He touched my shoulder, and I pulled away. "You knew, didn't you?"
"I knew about what?"
"About your sister, and my boyfriend!"
"I knew it. I knew you knew. Why didn't you tell me?!" Everyone was looking at me as the exited the classroom. "How long? How long had it been going on?"
"I don't know, a little after the day at the cafe.."
I laughed, which turned into tears. "You let me date him, even though he's been shacking it up with your sister? You just hit a new low, Cody. Stay away from me."
"Mia, just wai-"
"I mean it, Cody! I never want to speak to you again!"
I never thought I'd have to say those words, once again...
