The greatest Queen this country has ever known; that’s what they said about her.
Her people loved her, and she them.

It was the day of her ten-year-coronation and the cheers of joy echoed throughout the whole realm, the crowds roared in adoration, the people sang out in celebration – “Queen Vivienna, Queen Vivienna, long may she reign!”

Her humility and love for peace were what gave her the well earned title, for she was indeed the greatest Queen her country had ever known.

Nobody could have possibly believed it, then, that by the end of that very day her position as their beloved Monarch would be in serious jeopardy.

“Long may she reign!” they continued, “long may she reign....”

The day’s end had finally arrived, the ceremonies, parties, meeting and attendances had ceased, and for the first time the Queen found herself alone. She had been genuinely flattered by the day’s jubilation and enjoyed her celebration thoroughly, but now all she wanted was five minutes to herself to sit down and relax, peace perfect peace.

Someone had other plans however and before she had the chance to take a seat she was interupted by a soft knocking at the door.
The Queen trudged to the doorway despite her exhaustion and opened it to reveal a shy young maid. “Yes, Heidi?” she asked politely. The maid still couldn’t believe the Queen knew her name, but she knew the names of all of her many staff, none of them were just a face, all of them mattered and were treated with respect and kindness.

“Good evening your Majesty, I’m sorry to disturb you” she began, “I know you have meeting with people all day and you’re tired but you have a visitor, he says his matter is urgent and that he was a friend of your Father’s, the guards recognise him and are willing to let him in but of course they shall need your permission first. He said he won’t keep you long, he has a letter to deliver to you and then he will go”

“I see...okay” the Queen answered, scratching her head, “well yes, yes okay, if he says it’s urgent and he won’t be long then yes you may send him in. What did you say his name was?”

“I didn’t, your Majesty. It’s Lord Clarence Arbington” the maid replied.

“Arbie? Really? Why, I haven’t seen him in years. Please dear, send him to me right away in that case” the Queen answered.
 A sombre aging man appeared through the door- it was Lord Arbington, more affectionately known as Arbie. Arbie was her late Father’s closest advisor and dearest friend, he had been a regular face at the Palace court as the young Queen was growing up and she was understandably delighted to see him again. “Greetings, my Queen” he smiled as he clasped her hands, “before I say anything else I would just like to wish you congratulations on your decade anniversary as Queen, your Father would be so proud of you if he were here right now. It gave him great peace of mind that you were to take over the throne when he was gone, he just knew you'd make an extradordinary leader and he was right. He knew he was leaving his precious country in reliable hands. You’ve done a wonderful job.....even if it ends here I just want you to know that in my eyes, and the eyes of all your people, you’ll always be Queen to us”

“Thank you, Arbie” she answered, “but...what do you mean? What do you mean “even if it ends here”?” she said quizzically, she was perplexed by what he had just said. “I have a letter here, dear Vivienna, it’s for you and it’s from your Father. I’m going to leave it on this desk and I’m going to go. Read it when I leave, it will explain everything. How it pains me to be the bearer of this unfortunate news”

“But wait!” she protested, “Arbie! What on earth is going on here?” “Oh Vivi. Your Father, he left me with a great burden” he confided. “That letter, he asked me to deliver it to you on your tenth year as Queen, no sooner and no later. I have had sleepless nights for ten years you know, I’ve fretted about this, wondered whether to give you the letter or to burn it and let you continue on in ignorance. But I made a promise to your Father and I know I must keep my word, as he would have done for me. I now worry for the consequences of this country but you have to know the truth, it was what your Father wanted, and I must honour his wishes” The Queen watched, astounded, as Lord Arbington left the room, he disappeared as quickly as he arrived, leaving in his wake a whirlwind of confusion.

She then looked at the letter laid on her desk. It was stamped with the Royal seal of approval, proving it genuine.

Just looking at it filled her with a terrible sense of dread, so much that so that she didn’t want to read it, but she knew she must. Ignoring it wasn’t an option. It was a last message from her Papa, what did he want to tell her? So it was with great reluctance that she sat down, she opened the lengthy letter and with much apprehension she began to read.....unaware that by the time she had finished she would be left to make the toughest decision of her life...
