The Andretti Legacy
Chapter 92

I am sorry about not updating in a couple of months. I appreciate everyone who's stuck around. A few things were lost during the past few months due to the horrid patch from EA. So, we're changing up the story line a little, as well as some of the characters may look a bit differently. I apologize for all this, and hopefully the switch over to a new game won't come across as difficult as it really was for me. =)

Chapter 92

"...is something bothering you?" Lizzi asks softly as she looks over at her husband sitting next to her by the fire outside their hotel.

"You mean, besides all that for a stupid baseball?" Logan replies flatly.

"Yes." She stares at him in deep thought. "Something else is bothering you, I know it."
After a long pause, Logan sighs heavily and parts his lips.

"...becoming human...for you...came with a price, Lizzi." Logan looks over at her, and for a moment they stare into each other's eyes, and then Lizzi looks away, painfully. "I think it's a small price considering what I got for it..."

"I don't understand, Logan. You always said...you didn't want to end up like your parents...and...you made a deal...just like they did?" She stares into the flames with a million questions flowing through her mind.
"...I would do anything for you, Lizzi." He replies quietly. "Anything..." He looks into the fire, wondering what she's thinking.

"Logan, you didn't have to do this...I love you either way." She looks over at him.

"Sure...but you wouldn't have married me." He remains focused on the flames.

"You make me sound so shallow, Logan." She stares at him with hurt in her eyes.
"...they were right when they said the truth hurts. I think...the truth...hurt us both." He leans back in his chair.

"...don't bring this up right now." She states quickly as her eyes start to water. "Just don't."

"I need to keep my end of the bargain...and if I don't, they'll change me back...and I will lose you...you won't stay with me...you won't stay married to a ghost...think of what the neighbors would say." Logan laughs it off painfully. Lizzi's heart breaks; she knows he's right, and it hurts her so.
"What do you need me to do?" Lizzi chokes on her words, trying not to cry.

"...you have to go the cemetery...and you can't go because I want you to. You have to go because you want to." Logan continues to stare into the fire; everything he has depends on her.

"What do you mean?" She wrinkles her forehead trying to sort it out. "Of course I don't want to visit the cemetery, but I do love you...and I would go because you need me to."

"...that's just it." Logan looks up at her sadly. "...it isn't going to work."
"I don't understand, Logan." She stares at him sadly, it's getting harder to hold back the tears.

"...I can't help you, anymore. I'm sorry...you have to do this on your own...you have to want this." He quietly replies just over the crackling fire.

He rises from his seat, and heads back inside the hotel. They leave for home tomorrow, and he's not packed a single thing. Besides, she needs time to think.
She sits next to the fire, her heart aches as she scrolls through their conversation in her head.

"I don't understand, Logan..." She whispers quietly to herself as a tear rolls down her cheek.
They arrived home later the next day, and Logan drops his suitcase next the bed. Lizzi begins to unpack her clothes into the hamper as Logan watches her. He loves her. He loves her with everything he's got, but now it's her turn. The thought of what he feels to be true tears him half; he accepts, in the back of his mind, that'll he be turned to a ghost again. He takes one last look at her, and leaves the house. About 6 hours pass, and Logan still has not returned home. Lizzi makes a few phone calls, but no one has seen him.

"...you have to go the cemetery...and you can't go because I want you to. You have to go because you want to." She hears Logan's voice in the back of her mind. She still couldn't make out what he wanted from her, but the answer must be at the cemetery.
Lizzi arrives at the cemetery just after midnight. She stops in front of the Grim Reaper statue; she stares up at it, hoping for a clue, some type of sign. She doesn't know what happened to Logan, but she feels responsible for what happens to him. Out of the corner of her eye, Lizzi notices an orange ghost floating in the distance.

"Logan..." She cries out softly and hurries towards him.
"Logan!" She calls out to him, but he keeps floating away from her. "Stop please!" She shouts. "Oh..." The ghost finally stops and turns to face her. "I-I'm sorry...I thought you were someone...else..." She says quietly, the ghost turns and floats away. Lizzi watches the ghost float away from her, and her stomach twists in knots. What if it's too late to save him from reverting back? What if he's gone now, forever? She sets out across the cemetery in search of Logan or some type of sign. "Logan, please..." She whispers into the wind as she desperately searches for him. A ghost appears in front of Lizzi, making her jump.

"Excuse me." Lizzi apologizes softly and tries to walk around the ghost, but the ghost moves in front of her and blocks the path.

"You don't have much time..." The ghost's voice is old and weak.

"I'm sorry?" Lizzi questions the woman.

"You are looking for someone and you don't have much time." The ghost's voice cracks as she repeats herself.
"Do you know where he is? Can you help me?" Lizzi asks frantically. "Please..." She sighs heavily in desperation. "I've spent my entire after life rekindling the fires of the living." She speaks softly to Lizzi, and her voice is suddenly comforting. "I lost a love in life, as well. My heart was taken from me, and in death I have given everything to spare other's of the same grief." The ghost stares into Lizzi's soul, looking, searching for what she needed. "I find a sense of completion when a love has been set ablaze again." The ghost appears saddened, empty. "A young soul came to me, many days ago, and he was madly in love. The deepness of his emotion moved me greatly. He expressed a deep sadness, and he and I shared similar pasts. He was losing a love, and he was willing to give everything to keep it." Lizzi's heart drops; it is now that she realizes Logan came to this ghost for help. "...please, tell me what I need to do." Lizzi whimpers softly.

"I am unable. The answer lies within your heart if you want it badly enough. You are in the final hours. He will join us again if you cannot find what he needs." She replies softly, and slowly dissipates into the air leaving Lizzi standing alone and afraid.
Lizzi looks out across the cemetery again feeling lost. She scans the grounds, and notices Logan off in the distance. She blinks a few times to bring him into focus.

"Logan!" She calls out to him, as she runs to greet him.
"Logan!" She calls out again he takes notice of her. They both stop within just a few feet of each other. "What are you doing here, Lizzi?" Logan asks quietly.

"I...came here looking for you, Logan. I was worried about you..." Lizzi stares into Logan's eyes.

"You met her didn't you...?" Logan notices a strange look in her eyes, a look he's never seen before.

"I did..." Lizzi stares back with compassion.

"Lizzi...if I don't have you, I don't have anything. You are the one and only friend...the only person I live my life for. The only reason I keep going. I wanted to be the same for you...and as a ghost, that wasn't possible. She had an idea...and I was willing to take it...it's like Beauty and the Beast." His voice is soft and broken.
"...Logan..." Lizzi chokes on his name. "You did all this...you did this so that I would love you?" Her eyes fill with tears as she finally realizes what she needs to do. "I need to find you...deep within my heart...I need to find forever there, too. I am...sorry, this must be so painful for you. Logan, I do love you...you know that...but, what I must figure out is if I am happy here...if this is really everything that I want." Lizzi's heart breaks as she tells herself what she must do.

She closes her eyes and remembers all of the most important moments in her life...
... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... "...I can't remember a single moment in my life that you aren't in. I can't picture me anywhere else...you are my past and you are my future, and it pains me to think that it had to come to something like this for me to see it...I am so sorry, Logan...but, please...please don't leave me. I love you. I need you." She replies quietly. Off in the distance of the cemetery, the ghost reappears with a smile on her face. Logan and Lizzi take notice of her, and without saying a word, they know they're complete and it makes her heart that much more whole. She smiles kindly at the couple, and disappears into the air again. "Let's go home." Lizzi smiles as she embraces her husband.

I'm so happy to be back and reading your stories again. On the story, besides the fact that it's amazing, I love how you manage to make even the corniest of lines so sincere. For example, "The answer lies within your heart if you want it badly enough". That was so corny, yet it definitely moved me the most. Rating: \:rah\:
