The house was a beautiful old two storey shingle which had recently been restored to its original glories. Grayson McTavish loved the deep green colour it had been painted and he loved the fact there was a large pond and yet there was still a small space for him to grow the vegetables and fruit he enjoyed so much.
He'd moved to The Cape to get away from a disastrous adolescent relationship which had gone down the swanny fairly rapidly once he'd hit his young adulthood and he wasn't planning on getting involved with anyone any time soon.

Fate, however, had a whole different outcome in mind for Grayson and she wasn't going to take no for an answer.

The sun shone down on Grayson as he became absorbed in his painting. Ever since he could remember he'd loved to work on a canvas, putting down the brush strokes and seeing what turned out at the end.
He always became involved in his work, never noticing what was going on around him so it was no surprise that he'd missed the first two newspaper deliveries along with his first set of bills.
Fortunately the reminder came and he had time to pay up before the Repo Man came and took away something in return. It wasn't that he would have minded the loss, he'd bought the house fully furnished so none of the existing fittings had any special memories for him, but he kind of liked the way it looked and replacing some of the older pieces would have been a pain.
His cooking wasn't so hot. An attempt at barbecuing some hotdogs had ended up in the recycling bin and so he'd decided to take a ride into town and get a better look at the neighbourhood he'd moved into.
The Cape was just that, a little spit of land which stuck out into a crystal clear ocean which brought the smell of bougainvillea to his nose and the sound of waves crashing against golden sand could be heard faintly in the distance.
He drove into the centre of what passed as the main commercial area and discovered a delightful old tea cutter which had been turned into a restaurant and bistro.
The first person he bumped into while at The Clipper was the interestingly named Aeisha Inkbeard. A local military hotshot, she had a ready smile and a good sense of humour and they rapidly became friends.
It was only friendship as well because Aeisha was married to the equally piratically named Morgan Inkbeard, who Grayson also quickly became friends with. They provided him with a ready source of social discourse and plenty of opportunities for visits out while allowing him to continue to settle into his new life without the added distraction of a romantic entanglement.

Fate, however, was lurking and she was about to play her first card.
Moe Pesce, could he have a dafter name? Grayson had run into him at the other bistro in town, Napoleon's, after another attempt at his own cooking had gone wrong. He decided to take a class in the skill in the hopes that it would mean he could safely boil an egg without the fire brigade being on standby and then it happened.
He was a resident at The Cape's hospital. He was also a man, something Grayson hadn't quite bargained for but, hey, maybe that was why his teenage romance hadn't gone anywhere once they both hit all those late developing hormones.
They hit it off like a house on fire and Grayson began to wonder if perhaps he'd been barking up the wrong tree before but he was determined to take it slowly and discover if he really was going to be settling down with a guy who took people apart and put them back together again for a living.
Grayson had registered himself as a self-employed Painter. He figured it was time to put his artistic fingers to gainful use and it might stop him sitting at home musing about Moe and wondering whether he had the nerve to admit he was attracted to him. It wasn't so much the fact he was a man, it was the all the blood and guts that came with being involved with someone who worked in the medical career.
However, after moping around for a few weeks, going on the odd trip to the bistro with Moe or out to the theatre or to catch a movie, Grayson decided enough was enough and plucked up the courage to tell his friend that he felt a little bit more than just buddies for him.
When Grayson first told Moe he was attracted to him his friend's reaction didn't give him any indication of how he was feeling. So it came as quite a surprise when Moe suddenly flirted right back at him with a sly wink.
At the same time he'd told Grayson he'd got a promotion - to trauma surgeon. More blood and guts for his pal to have to deal with, Moe wasn't sure that he was going to be able to stick it out when he saw the horrified look on Grayson's face. Perhaps it was time for him to go back to doing what he loved best and work on that Perfect Garden.
There was a sudden pause, full of expectation, as both of them absorbed the information they'd just received and contemplated the hidden desires they'd both revealed.

Fate gave them both a push.
Grayson couldn't believe his ears when Moe told him he was thinking about giving up the medical career. He was so overjoyed that, without thinking, he grabbed his friend and gave him a huge embrace. The feel of Moe's athletic and muscular body drove any sane ideas out of Grayson's head and, without a second thought or contemplation of what his actions might bring, he kissed him.
Well, Moe kissed him right back and, before either of them could take a second breath, they'd ended up making out right there in the parking lot. One thing led to a very rapid engagement and marriage, both of them being old fashioned types, and the new Mr and Mr McTavish returned home to begin their new life together.
Moe fished, Grayson painted. Moe gardened, Grayson painted. Their happy home life proved to be satisfactory to them both and resulted in lots of quality time together in which to discuss whether they wanted to start a family and, if so, how should they go about it.
Surrogacy was one route, but they weren't sure if they wanted to spoil their relationship dynamic with the introduction of a female donor. They thought long and hard and decided, in the end, that adoption was the right route to go down. That way they wouldn't have to worry over which one had provided the spark of life with the donor. Instead they would both be the Dad and their child would grow up knowing that, even though they weren't biologically related, Grayson and Moe had chosen them from love.
They turned their old en suite bathroom into a nursery and then made an anxious call to the City Hall social worker to see whether they'd be able to add a baby to their happy family.
Violetta had been left on the doorstep of The Cape's hospital with a little note that simply gave her name. She was a brave and musical child and the Social Worker was more than happy to pass her on to Grayson and Moe to bring up as their own.

Both Grayson and Moe loved taking care of their daughter. Violetta was a delightful baby, easy to take care of as she hardly ever cried and had a happy nature. They took it in turns to change her nappy, feed her a bottle of milk and catch up with some lovely burpy snuggles. Her laughter echoed around the already happy home and life continued along in its own sweet way.
As they both worked from home and had jobs which needed them to be occupied for long stretches of time, they hired a maid to help keep the house tidy.
As the days passed by, Grayson continued to develop his painting skill. He also took up the electric guitar as it seemed to soothe Violetta on the very rare occasions she got into a grump. Moe was always out grubbing around in his garden, trying to find the best fertiliser to keep his plants happy, only popping back inside to steal a cuddle with his daughter.

Little did they know that Fate was still watching over them and she was about to pull out a Joker.

To be continued . . .

Martoele - Bougainvillea ‘Arborea’ is the only known variety that is fragrant, it smells similar to honeysuckle. Thank you to everyone for leaving such lovely comments on my story. It's the first one I've written this way, I did have a go at a Rags to Riches on on the old TS2 story forum before losing the neighbourhood the game was set in, so it's nice to get some positive vibes back.
Part two is on the way shortly.
