Courtney and Scarlett had been best friends since childhood, and moving to Bridgeport had been a shared dream of theirs since they realised they were getting nowhere fast in Twinbrook.

Their parents had been very supportive, and insisted on buying the two girls a small house to get them started.

Initially, the move to the big city had been a welcome release from the boredom and lack of opportunity they had become used to. However, neither of them had given a second thought to the possibility that somewhere along the line, it could all go very, very wrong...

They did everything together.

Scarlett wanted nothing more than to become a world renowned surgeon, and was determined to land that elusive job at the Sacred Spleen Memorial Hospital on the outskirts of town...

She studied a lot of the time, but the job always seemed to be just out of her reach...

Courtney meanwhile, was content with enjoying herself in their expensively furnished house. She paid little attention to Scarlett's work, and did not seem to realise that Scarlett's studies would be much more fruitful if she would turn her music off!!
Scarlett didn't mind though, she knew Courtney far too well, and was too loyal to complain...

Besides, she enjoyed helping Courtney, and put in just as much hard work helping with her portfolio.

Scarlett knew just how much Courtney wanted to be famous, and did everything in her power to ensure she had the best possible chance of competing with the famous and fearless in the industry - they even converted the basement of their house into a studio! Scarlett was convinced. If there was a job out there for Courtney, she would do her best to help her get it.
Meanwhile, she was forced to make ends meet by taking on work as a nanny... and was speechless when she landed a job with the famous (and mega-rich) Hamming family!

She worked for them 3 days a week, and couldn't help but be amazed at their incredible home!

They had the best of everything and were very generous employers! Plus, their children were very well-behaved and very intelligent - a little too intelligent for children of their age perhaps...

There was something surreal about that family... and Scarlett could never quite put her finger on it...
She spent a lot of time tutoring their youngest son, Jasper (not that he needed it, he often asked questions even Scarlett had trouble answering!)

Strangest of all, he loved to work outside, which would be completely normal for a child his age... except Jasper preferred to work in the dark! He'd never go outside when it was sunny, which Scarlett frequently tried to persuade him to do... he was so pale!

She couldn't really ignore the feeling that there was something going on in that household...
When Scarlett tried to talk to Courtney about it, she just laughed at her!

"Don't be so ridiculous!! What, do you think they're zombies or something? HA! ... Seriously Scar, get a grip, you're just intimidated by them because they're so famous!" ... She sighed wistfully... "one day I'll be just like that."

"Courtney I'm not messing around! There's something weird going on. I'm going to find out what it is. And stop calling me 'Scar'. I hate it."

"What are you going to do? Rake through their garbage? HA! I don't think so, Scar..."
Despite her friend's lack of support, Scarlett decided to drive over to their house late at night and see if she could get any clues as to what was making her so nervous about them.

She drove slowly, not wanting to draw attention to herself. Despite wanting to know more about the Hammings, panic took over as she realised what she was doing. If they caught her sneaking through the security gates when she wasn't supposed to be there they'd fire her for sure!

She shook her head and told herself to stop being so silly.

"It's so dark, they won't even see who's driving the car... Don't be such a baby!"

But just as she pulled up to the house, she got a call from Courtney...
"Hi Scar! Listen, are you going to help me with these new pictures or not? These are the last ones I need, then I can start job-hunting properly!"

Scarlett sighed, she had promised she would take the final few pictures for Courtney's portfolio that evening. Snooping around at the Hamming's would have to wait.

"Yeah sure! I'll be home soon!"
Scarlett rushed home, and helped Courtney with her pictures. Well, she did most of the work. Courtney just stood there looking pretty while Scarlett developed the photos and put together the final version of her portfolio...

They spent the rest of the night in the living room, Courtney bragging loudly about her plans to become a superstar to her friends back in Twinbrook...

Scarlett meanwhile, wasn't paying any attention. Her mind was fixed on other things...
The next morning, the two of them discussed their plans for the day over breakfast.

Courtney's ego (already huge) had been inflated even more by the bragging session she'd had the night before over the phone to her friends... she was almost unbearable.

"So I'm going to head down to the Film Studio today. I'll go straight to the director and show him my pictures. He'll probably give me a job on the spot! Scar, things are going to happen today, I just know it!"

"Nothing is going to happen! You go marching in like that and you'll just look like all the other wannabes hanging around. But if you're going, you should probably wear something different. You've been wearing that dress for days!"

"It's the only designer one I have Scar, I'm not going down there dressed like a hobo! And maybe you're right. Maybe nothing will happen. But I have to try! Nothing will ever change if I stay here all day in our stupid little basement, wasting time taking silly photos. I have a good feeling about this. You'll see!"
Scarlett was hurt by Courtney's harsh words, and just for a moment, wished that she had never left Twinbrook. All the hard work she had put in to help her friend had been brushed off. She had never felt so unappreciated and alone in her life.

She turned to give Courtney a piece of her mind, but she was already on her way out. There was no point calling her back just for an argument.

Leaving Scarlett alone in the house Courtney walked into town.

She could have taken a taxi, or Scarlett's car, but she like to walk over the bridge and see the skyscrapers dominating the impressive view. It reminded her why she was here, and made her all the more determined to succeed.
Down at the Studio, she noticed a set that had been left out.

Standing in front of it, she imagined herself doing this for a living, with thousands of adoring fans and truckloads of money....
She was so absorbed in her daydream of stardom, that she didn't notice she was being watched.

Embarrassed, she turned to see none other than the hugely famous (and handsome) Ben King!

Panicking. She tried to regain composure, and decided to say hi.
She walked over, trying her best to act normal.

"Um, hi? Was there something you wanted?" She hadn't meant to sound so rude, and cringed as she waited for his response...

"I'm so sorry, you just looked really happy! And you have such a beautiful smile, I didn't mean to stare. Do you work here?"

He looked nervous, and shy - something Courtney had not expected. She couldn't help but let her guard down. Forgetting all about showing her portfolio to the director, she just enjoyed talking to the flawless celebrity that had taken an interest in her...
"Well it was really nice to meet you Courtney, um... would you- ... I mean, maybe if you're not busy... I just-" He blushed as he stumbled over his words...

"I'm free Friday night!" Courtney smiled, "Here's my number, give me a call!"

Courtney wanted to rush home and tell Scarlett all about this exciting new development, but knew she'd just be angry that she hadn't tried harder to get a job...

She decided to hang out at a bar for a while, before heading home.

'A while' turned out to be all day. She loved talking to people, and she got plenty of attention. A journalist even asked her for a photo after overhearing her mention Ben. She was definitely going places. And was feeling extremely proud of herself.
By the time Courtney got home that night, Scarlett was fast asleep.

It didn't matter, she would hear all about the brilliant news in the morning!

Courtney went to bed, feeling torn between the business opportunities having an admirer as famous as Ben would bring, and the fact that she couldn't stop thinking about those gorgeous sparkling eyes and the fluttering in her tummy that just wouldn't go away...

Courtney certainly is full of herself!  What an inconsiderate roommate!  And uh, Scarlett?  Most peopole don't like it when you go through their trash.  Really good way to get fired from a nannying job. :P

GO COURTNEY WOOT! She's just being herself, chasing a dream and being true to what she feels, she's human. I know I've been mean, inconsiderate, disrespectful and a total backstabber when I go to far on my dream chasing but hey that's okay, I've got a lot of Scarlet's to step on. (I'm half kidding. I did step on some people) Scarlet should just man up, she's old enough. She's not some whiney teenager on confused hormones.
