Cairo was already in the office when Theo swung through the door.

"You're late" he said with a smirk. They both knew that he was the one with the reputation for tardiness, not Theo.

Theo grunted a short greeting while allowing the door to slam shut behind him.
"Hey, why the grumpy face? We're so close to cracking this case!" Cairo said excitedly "Joshua is going down and taking his girls with him. I'm surprised they managed to keep this going for so long, it takes major skills. But he's no match when it comes to us huh buddy?"

Theo's face remained impassive.

"Want to tell me what's going on?" asked Cairo walking over to him "We were so excited when Elias contacted us with this case, now it seems like I'm the only one who's putting in the effort" He scrunched his face before continuing , "I didn't want to say anything at the bar but if after all these weeks, all you have on Ava are a few measly pictures then it's time to seriously up your game, dig deeper… get rid of any distractions"

"I'm not distracted" Theo said curtly "I know everything there is to know about her, did the background check and everything. We know she's part of the scheme so when you locate Joshua's account and trace it back to him, it's all over for them. They rot in jail and Elias finally gets his revenge"

"So why do you look so sad then?" asked Cairo even though he already knew the answer.

"I'm just tired" replied Theo "Can we get this over with? I didn't sleep last night"
He pulled out his phone and started scrolling through the pictures to find the ones that would be of interest to Elias. Cairo walked over to his desk and plopped down on the chair, humming a tune as the monitor buzzed to life. "Alright, let's get this party started. Send the files to me via Bluetooth, its faster. Meanwhile I'll start composing the email, he'll want to know every little detail" he said, tapping away at the keyboard "I almost feel sorry for them you know, they have no idea what's coming their way. But it's what they deserve; scam artists are the scum of the earth. No, worse than scum, much worse" Theo finished sending the files and sat waiting on the sofa deeply bothered by Cairo's words. *It's true, scam artists are terrible people but not Ava* he thought to himself. *No, not Ava* As Cairo continued ranting all Theo could think about was getting back to his place to be with her. He hoped that she was OK and wished he had at least left her a note explaining how she had ended up there and that he had gone out but would be back soon. Meanwhile...

When Ava woke up it took her a few minutes to process the fact that she wasn't in her own bed. Her heart began racing in fear *oh no, what have I done?* she thought to herself. She quickly looked to her right and was slightly relieved to find it empty but it did little to calm her growing panic. As she attempted to get up, the throbbing pain in her head forced her to lay back down again.

With eyes squeezed shut, she bit her bottom lip until the throbbing died down before finally opening her eyes again and taking in her surroundings. The walls were a dull sea green, the bedroom furniture was shabby, the dresser a bit dusty and in a chair by the side was a pile of unfolded laundry. She also noticed that the room had a very familiar scent. Then it slowly dawned on her that the room smelled faintly of Theo's cologne. It was unmistakably his and brought back memories of that night weeks ago at the beach playground when he had held her so close.
"Oh god, I hope we didn't" she whispered out loud to herself before cautiously sitting up. Now that she was sat up, she could clearly see her house from the open bedroom window, confirming her fears. She was definitely in Theo's bedroom. At first she just sat there with her head still throbbing slightly, calculating her next move before she finally noticed the tray of food on the side table.

She had wondered if Theo was up and around the house somewhere but now realized that he had probably made her breakfast and left. The house was eerily quiet.

*He probably couldn't bear to face the reality of what we did* she thought to herself *I really need to stop drinking, this never should have happened*

Her stomach grumbled and the tray of food suddenly looked very appealing. She was torn between wanting to get up and hurry home and remaining seated to eat. In the end, she went for the food, quickly swallowing large morsels and washing it down with lukewarm tea.
Then she grabbed the empty plates and went looking for the kitchen which she found quite easily. It was a tiny house with old mismatched furniture, a lot of which seemed to be second hand. As she washed the dishes she wondered why a guy like Theo would choose to live there.

As she wiped her wet hands on her dress she felt the outline of her phone in one of the pockets. She pulled it out and switched it on to see 14 missed calls.
She dialed voicemail as she made her way out of the house, carefully closing the door shut behind her.

"Hey it's Lauren, I've called you 10 times now but it goes straight to voicemail. Please, please call me back, I'm worried sick. Where are you? I felt terrible after what happened and came back looking for you but you were gone and you weren't at your house either. I have your keys, you left them in my car. I'm really sorry for leaving you, I'll never forgive myself if something happened to you… please call me when you get this sweety"

The next four messages were also from Lauren, each sounding increasingly desperate.

As Ava listened to the messages, she slowly began to piece together the previous night's events. It was all coming back to her and she sighed a sigh of relief now certain that nothing had happened between her and Theo, excluding the drunken kiss.

After reaching the end of the messages, she hung up and quickly dialed Lauren's number. She answered on the first ring.
After hanging up, Ava crossed over to her street and made her way to the front steps of her house where she sat waiting for Lauren who had apparently stayed up all night driving around the streets of Miami looking for her.

The ground quickly became unbearably hot so Ava sought shade in the covered portion of her patio. With her head resting on her knees, she waited while replaying the events in her still slightly fuzzy mind. When Lauren finally arrived, Ava could tell by her bloodshot eyes and smeared makeup that she had been crying. They hugged tightly as Lauren once again broke down into tears.
"I'm so sorry for leaving you" she sobbed.

"It's ok" Ava said, comfortingly patting her back "It's ok. I'm fine, nothing happened to me so you don't have to worry" She had already explained everything on the phone.
An hour later a now comforted Lauren had gone home and Ava was finally alone again. She knew she would have to thank Theo for his hospitality but for now but she desperately needed to rest so she kicked off her heels and curled up on the nearest couch. Meanwhile…

Theo had returned to an empty house and upon seeing that the food had been eaten and dishes washed, assumed that Ava had safely returned home. After showering, he slipped on his usual attire which now felt more like a uniform, reminding him he was a private investigator. He had then eaten lunch before taking a long nap.

A few hours later, upon being awoken by the sound of the doorbell, he had rushed to the door, hoping to see Ava's face but was disappointed to come face to face with Cairo instead. He had come by to tell Theo that Elias was very pleased with their progress so far and was offering them a raise. As they sat chatting in the living room, time flew by and before long it was dark.
At 8PM sharp, Ava, shower fresh and revitalized, crossed the street and headed to Theo's house. She knew he was inside because the lights were on but still paused before ringing the doorbell. The sound of the buzzer startled Theo and he tried not to look too panicked as he realized it could only be Ava.

"Were you expecting someone?" asked Cairo, trying to sound as neutral as possible.

Theo hopped out of his seat and looked out the window before clearing his throat "It's just one of the neighbors, our mail gets mixed up all the time" he lied, wishing he had come up with a less generic and more believable excuse.

Cairo clenched his jaw. He hated being lied to. "Well I should get going anyways, it's getting late" he finally said, jumping up and heading to the door.
"No!" Theo half yelled, starting to panic. "I mean, stay, grab a drink from the fridge; we still have a few things to go over" He was still at the window, half turning towards Cairo and praying he didn't come any closer.

Cairo raised his brow, "Pretty sure we already went over everything".

"Just get the drinks ok? And grab some glasses and ice as well. I'll be back" Theo insisted.

Cairo finally shrugged and headed to the kitchen much to Theo's relief.
Once outside, Theo firmly shut the door behind him before greeting Ava.

"I just had to stop by to thank you for last night, or this morning rather. I really appreciate what you did"

"You didn't have to but you're very welcome"
Ava paused "I also didn't want you to think that I'm like that all the time… I'm embarrassed about my behavior and I apologize… for the kiss"

Theo couldn't help but smile. "It's ok" he said, although there was so much he wanted to say. She looked beautiful, as usual, and smelled of Vanilla. Her skin glistened against the light cast by the street lights and he found himself longing to caress it. So much so that he had almost forgotten that Cairo was back inside waiting.

"I have a guest waiting for me, he has to go soon so I best get back inside but thanks for stopping by"
"Oh, ok, I'm sorry, I thought you were alone… well thank you again for everything"
Theo nodded, then to his surprise Ava pulled out her phone and asked for his number.

The numbers flew out of his mouth before he had time to realize and regret it.

"This way we can stay in touch. I owe you a coffee or something as a thank you" said Ava smiling. "Well, I better get going so you can get back to your guest" she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek before turning around and walking away.

Theo stood, watching her walk away, a smile still frozen on his face. "You're out of drinks so I'm making Mac and cheese since I haven't eaten all day" said Cairo when Theo came back inside.

But Theo didn't even hear him.

Uh oh, Cairo won't be happy!!!!

#2HellsaintOct 17, 2011

yep, i agree. Cairo would be pretty displeased with the events. But considering that he already knew what is going on with Theo, he wouldn't be that surprised with the current situation... nice chapter! \:D

He's not going to risk it and blow his whole cover when they're nearly done with the case.. it must be so hard for Theo to work properly anymore. Can't wait for more \:wub\: Love the screenshots \;\)

If Cairo truly has the spirit of PI I'm sure he checked from the window in order to conferm his suspicion. If not maybe they both should change job :P!

\:confused\: \:mad\: Well, I feel bad for Ava; Looking how the story has developed over time, Theo is "in the know", Cairo knows about Theo and Ava; Joshua, Lauren and Kelly are all "in it". . .seems the only one left out in the dark is Ava. . .she's just looking for a soft place to land when she bails out. . .so, I feel sorry for her. . .as savvy as she may be, there is something "innocent" about her, something that doesn't allow her to be suspicious of the man across the street who watches her. . .Have a feeling Theo is headed for trouble with Cairo (he hates being lied to). . .but am left to wonder whether or not Theo is going to be the man I hope him to be. . .Great chapter. . .(don't worry about it being short, sometimes you have to have an in between chapter to keep the chapter before or after from being too long. . .I get the feeling that's what this one was. . .fits with the one before, but that would have made for a long read "here". . .you understand? ) I will explain that somewhere  else. Thanks for the excellent morning read (5 and 6) \:wub\:
