Aj wiped his face. He tried his best to compose himself but couldn't. He cancelled his time from the studio for the next two week.
Aj: Brooklyn.....

Aj wiped his face. He tried his best to compose himself but couldn't. He cancelled his time from the studio for the next two week.
Aj: Brooklyn.....
Days had passed and Aj had finally made it back to Lake View after tying up loose ends.
He walked slowly up to the house. It was just as he had remembered it 8 years ago. He cursed himself for not coming by sooner and waiting so long to finally come by. Now that it was too late.
The path seemed long as he walked up to the door. His hands trembled as he brought it to push the doorbell. His throat seemed dry again. He waited for what seemed like forever. Brooklyn opened the door. She was shocked at first when she saw him. She leaned against the door and looked at him again for a minute, making sure he was truly there. He could tell that the past days were taking its toll on her and she did not look well.
Aj: Hello.
She ran into his arms. They embraced each other for a long time at the door.
Aj: Sorry I took so long.
Brooklyn: I'm just happy you came. Mamie told me she called you. I just wasn't sure. I couldn't call anyone. I was still in shock.
Aj: I should have never been gone for so long.
Brooklyn: Let's not talk about the past.
Aj: How have you been?
Brooklyn: It's been trying. Nights have been hard.
Aj: If you need any help let me know. I am here for you, you know that.
Brooklyn and Aj walked into the house.
Sophia: AJ!!
Aj took a double take as he saw the teenager standing in front of him.
Her ebony hair and dark almond eyes.
She ran towards him and hugged him. He held her tight. His little girl grew up. He closed his eyes as he felt her hold on to him. He didn't want to let go. Sophia: Granny said you would come.
Aj: I had to.
Sophia: I'm so happy you came.
Aj: I am too.
He could barely talk. He kept staring at her. He wanted to touch her face, but he talked himself out of it.
She hugged him again.
Sophia: Dad would have loved seeing you.
Aj: I'm just sorry it took this for me to finally come to see you guys.
Just then, he heard the barking at his feet.
He bent down to the see the small white dog wagging his tail at him.
Aj: Pal?
Sophia: Pal Jr. Pal died a few years back. This is her daughter. I sometimes call her Pj.
Pal licked his hand as he rubbed her head.
Brooklyn: Sophie, give me and Aj some time to talk please.
Sophie: Okay. Let me know when you are done. I have so much to catch you up on.
Aj: I promised.
Sophia smiled at him. He felt his heart beat harder as he smiled back.
The two of them sat down at the couches.
Aj: Are you both okay? I mean, it's been less than a week.
Brooklyn: She's been good to me. She's been my rock. I don't know what I would have done without her. It's so different. I expect him to just come walking through the door. For the past few nights I've even made an plate for him at the dinner table. Even found myself calling his name.
Aj: I just can't believe he's gone. It was just a few weeks ago we talked about Sophia coming to visit.
Aj felt guilty. Guilty for never seeing his friend. Never taking the time to come back and spend time with them. To put aside his own feelings.
Aj: What happened? How did it happen?
Brooklyn: He was on a call to the horse farm on the other side of town. From what they told me, his group were releasing the animals from the building while the others where in charge of putting out the flame. The floor was weak and broke underneath them.
They called me just hours after it happened. Sophia walked in the house as soon as I heard the news. She could tell that something was wrong. I had to tell her, but she didn't believe me. She just ran out the house when I told her. We found her a few hours later at the park. She took it worse than any of us. Brooklyn: I thought it was a big deal when he was in that coma years ago, now this. I'm just taking it day by day. Sometimes I'm just numb to things. I don't know what to do, who to talk to. His mom has been handling everything. He was all she had left since his dad past away last year.
Aj: Like I said I am here to help you. Whatever, whenever. You and Sophie.
Brooklyn: Thanks. I've just got some last minute things to take care of.
They talked more about the next few days before the funeral. It was good for Brooklyn that Aj was around. She needed him, she needed a true friend. Just as they were getting ready to get some coffee from the kitchen, Aj heard music coming from the back room.
Aj: What's that?
Brooklyn: Sophia.
Aj began to walk towards the hallway.
Brooklyn: She has the gift. Just like you.
Aj looked at her again before he walked further down towards her room. Brooklyn nodded her head at him.
He entered the room and watched as Sophia was playing on her guitar. It was a melody he had never heard before. She was so concentrated in what she was playing that at first she didn't notice him standing there. Aj: I didn't know you could play.
Sophia: I don't know how. It's just something I felt like I could do. I've only been playing since the 6th grade. I've been playing a lot. My dad bought me this guitar last year. I was one of the best gifts I've ever gotten. I've been practicing this song for him. I'm playing it at the funeral.
Aj: It's beautiful. It's just as good as anything I have ever written.
Sophia: You really think so.
Aj: I know so.
He stood there and listened to her play the rest of the song.
Aj kept his word and helped Brooklyn with the funeral. It was good for her that he was able to relieve some of the stress of burying her husband. At times she could barely get out of bed or answer the phone.
The day of the funeral almost the entire town was there to mourn the loss of a well-liked townsman.
Brooklyn and Sophia were able to keep it together throughout the funeral and at the cemetery. Neither of them wanted to break down. As they lowered his casket into the ground, Brooklyn felt her life go with him. She couldn't take it, and bit her lip to stop from crying. She wanted to be strong for Sophia. But it was Sophia that broke down. Seeing his body in the ground meant that he was really gone. Her mother held her as she cried. But she too was beginning to break. Aj walked from behind the immediate family and held on Sophia's hand. He had tried to stay behind to let them grieve with their family. Sophia quickly moved to hug him. She buried her face in his shoulder.
Aj: It is alright.
When the burial was over they walked to the limos. Aj again followed close behind.
It was late when everyone finally left from the repass. Brooklyn had stayed in her room since leaving the cemetery. She had cried herself to sleep and locked the door so that no one could disturb her.
She heard the knocks at the door but tried to ignore them. She didn't want to speak to anyone. Didn't want the looks and people feeling bad for her.
She sat up when she heard the door open. It was Aj.
Brooklyn: How did you get in?
Aj: Picked the lock. I was getting a little worried.
Brooklyn: I just needed some time alone.
She wiped her face as she stood up.
Aj: Are you? Look, no one is expecting you to be superwoman. It's okay to have emotions you know.
Brooklyn: I just haven't felt this way since Pops died. I just need my time to grieve. Haven't really had much time alone with everyone coming and going.
Aj: I understand. Just know I am here for you.
Brooklyn: I know.
She looked down at the floor. He grabbed her hand.
Aj: Really. You don't have to do this alone.
Aj had stayed almost two weeks after the funeral. He felt bad leaving Sophia and Brooklyn so he stayed longer than he originally planned. He spent a lot of time with Sophia while he was there. One of his favorite things was going fishing with her. Sophia: I remember when you first taught me how to fish. I caught this little anchovy. I was so excited.
Aj laughed.
Aj: Yeah, I remember. And you made Brooklyn cook it on the grill. It was like a little appetizer.
Sophia: It was toothpick compared to what you caught.
The both laughed together thinking about it. There was a pause between them.
Sophia: Aj?
Aj: Yeah?
Sophia: Why didn't you come back to visit?
Aj: I....I...I just got busy that's all. Got so caught up in the business that I didn't make time for the people I loved. Time went by so fast. It isn't a good excuse and I should have.
Sophia: You promised me last time that you would visit. I hope the next time you visit won't be at my wedding.
Aj: I should not have taken so long. I just....
Sophia: Just what?
Aj: Nothing. I just thought you were too busy for me.
Sophia: Never.
Aj listened to Sophia as she talked about school and her friends. Every now and then he could recognize that little girl he met years ago through her animated facial expressions.
And when she saw a group of butterflies fluttered near them, she slowly walked to them. One of them landed on her hand as she held it out.
Aj: That's good luck. Make a wish.
Sophia closed her eyes and just as she was finished the butterfly fluttered away.
Aj looked at how happy she was. How she enjoyed dancing and singing about.
He was about to say something. But just like years ago, he stopped.

Beautifully touching chapter. Your characters are so 'real' which makes the story all the more emotional.
Congrats on the feature \:\)

So sad that Travis passed.  Wonder how it will be revealed that AJ is really Sopiha's father.  Great chapter.

Great chapter. I'm so sad you killed off Travis. I wonder if Brooklyn and Sophia would be able to get through it and if AJ will tell Sophia the truth.

I suppose it was necessary taking Travis out the equation for the story to proceed. And drama is always good for storytelling. Anyway it's very sad.
