Welcome! As promised, here is chapter three of Forever Changing. If you have not read the previous two chapters I recommend that you do so now as they will fill you in on a lot of missing details needed to understand this chapter! :) We left off with some pretty big news on Josh and Anna's part, and now we'll venture into the events that unfolded afterwards. Let's begin! :) Mara couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't be in the same room as Josh or Anna. She needed to get away, so she ran. She ran out of their apartment, down the stairs, and out the front door. Anywhere was better than there. Mara ran across the lawn that separated the two apartment buildings half-sobbing and half-panting. She felt like she couldn't breathe and she was pretty certain it wasn't because of her short jaunt. She ran up the stairs of her apartment landing, sprinted to the floor her apartment was on, barged inside, and flopped onto her bed.
Meanwhile, Alaina was outside talking to one of their neighbors about helping her move her furniture inside. Their conversation came to an abrupt end when she saw Mara come running out of Josh and Anna's building.
Alaina's face instinctively scrunched up as she balled her fists.
"What did he do now?" Alaina thought to herself as she marched inside.
"I will destroy him if he hurt her again," she mumbled under her breath as she jogged up the stairs.
Alaina had no idea what could have happened between Josh and Mara in such a short amount of time that could cause such a major reaction. She was beyond concerned and more than a little angry.
When Alaina got inside she lightly knocked on Mara's bedroom door. She received no reply but could hear Mara sobbing inside.
"I'm coming in..." Alaina said softly and she slowly opened the door. Mara was sprawled out on her bed crying and gasping for air.
"Are you alright? Can I do anything?" Alaina stated with concern. She received no reply. Instead of speaking again, she simply crawled onto Mara's bed and rubbed her arm gently. After several minutes Mara caught her breath and was able to talk about what had just happened.
"S-s-she is p-p-pregnant," Mara stuttered as tears slid down her checks.
"Who is pregnant?" Alaina said softly. Mara rolled over onto her stomach and looked at Alaina unable to speak.
"It's okay, take your time," Alaina whispered. After several moments passed Mara managed to compose herself enough to speak again.
"Anna is pregnant," Mara said blankly as more tears escaped her eyes.
Mara slid off the bed and onto the floor. Alaina said nothing as she did not know what to say. Several minutes passed before Mara spoke again.
"He didn't come after me. I ran out and he didn't come after me," Mara cried.
"Mar, don't cry. He doesn't deserve those tears. If he isn't smart enough to come after you then he doesn't deserve you. Baby or not, his lack of action is not excused," Alaina calmly stated.
Alaina got off the bed and sat next to Mara on the floor.
"I don't know how to be okay with any of this," Mara said softly as a few more tears slid down her cheeks.
"You don't have to know how right now. It's a lot, no one could possibly expect you to know how to deal with all of this," Alaina said as she gently patted Mara's shoulder.
"Today was supposed to be the day that we got back together, not the day he finds out he is going to be the father of another woman's baby..."
"I know, Mar. But this is something that we have no control over. It's not worth wasting time worrying about because there is nothing we can do to change it. But I do know what we can do. We can handle this situation in a couple of different ways. The first options is to have a night out on the town. We can get some drinks, do some dancing, just have a little boy-free fun. The second option is to check ourselves into the spa. We can get massages, mani-pedi's, and be pampered. What we aren't going to do is sit around and be sad about a stupid guy and a situation that we have no control over. So what do you choose, going out or checking into the spa?" Mara preached.
"Going out...definitely going out. I could really use some drinks and a little fun," Mara blurted.
"Alright, then let's get dolled up and head out! This town doesn't know what's about to hit it!" Alaina cheered, attempting to lighten up the mood.
"Look good, feel good," Alaina said as she walked out of Mara's room. So Mara searched through her clothes for something she thought would have the power to make her feel good about herself right now. Seven outfits later, and she found a black glittery number that she thought might be able to do the trick. Mara slipped into her dress, fixed her makeup, and readjusted her hair. Still, she didn't feel better. As she looked at her reflection in the mirror all she could see was the sadness in her eyes. She was starting to regret her decision to go out. Her mind was elsewhere, there is was no way that being around a bunch of random sweaty people in a club was going to make her feel better about herself. Still, she was willing to try. As Mara walked down the stairs Alaina began wolf-whistling at her.
"Ow, ow! You are looking G-double the O-D, Good!" Alaina half-joked cheerfully.
"No, but in all seriousness, you look smokin'!" Alaina cheered as she pointed finger guns at Mara. Mara let out a small smile.
"Okay, maybe looking good does contribute to feeling good," Mara thought to herself as she felt her mood improve ever so slightly.
"Let's head out, the club is only open until three!" Alaina joked as she headed for the door.
"It's still light outside...it feels wrong to go to a club when the sun is still out..." Mara said hesitantly.
"Oh calm down, by the time we get there it will be dark. The sun is about to go down. It'll be fine!" Alaina chirped as she grabbed Mara by the arm and yanked her out the door. "We're going to have fun!"
Meanwhile, back at Josh and Anna's apartment, the two decided to sit down and actually talk about the baby. However, there was not a lot of talking going on, just sitting and staring. It was beyond awkward. "So...are we going to talk or what?" Anna sassed as she shrugged her shoulders.
"Uh, yeah. We kind of have to," Josh mumbled.
"Well, I don't really know where to start. This wasn't something that I was planning on. I don't have any idea how I am going to be able to raise a baby when I am still in my residency. My hours are crazy at the hospital and I am almost never home," Anna rambled.
"Uh yeah...that is an issue..." Josh murmured.
"Did you even hear me? This is an actual concern! Whatever you're thinking, just say it. I know you're holding something back," Anna barked.
"Okay, well I don't know how to say this nicely so I am just going to say it...is the baby even mine?" Josh blurted.
"Excuse me!? Hold on a second, are you accusing me of sleeping around? If so, that is just rich coming from you seeing as you've been with half the women in the town!" Anna sassed.
"I told you, I didn't know how to say it nicely. I am not judging you, I just know that we have both been around the ring quite a few times. I just want to know if there is a possibility that this baby is not mine?"
"Are you serious right now? This is absolutely ridiculous!" Anna yelled.
"Hey, I just need to know that this kid is mine. If you won't flat out tell me then I want you to get a DNA test done," Josh stated calmly as he made a small gesture with his hands.
"Josh, I am eight weeks into my pregnancy according to my doctor, the timing lines up exactly with our little rendezvous. But you want me to get a DNA test? That is ridiculous!" Anna growled.
"What? I think it's a very reasonable request!" Josh spat as he threw his hands up.
"Reasonable? Do you know how dangerous that can be for an unborn fetus? It can really damage the baby and possibly even cause me to lose the baby. I am not doing it," Anna retorted.
"Well, then we'll wait. We'll get one done when the baby is born. Until then I think that I should stay as uninvolved with the pregnancy as possible," Josh said slowly.
"And when the baby comes, we get the test, and you find out that it is indeed yours, you aren't going to be regretful that you missed out on all of the experiences that occurred during the pregnancy?"
"Like what?" Josh said as he tossed her hands in the air.
"Oh, I don't know, listening to the heartbeat for the first time, sonograms, feeling the baby move inside of my stomach, finding out the gender, picking out a name, decorating the nursery...everything," Anna rambled.
"Oh...I didn't know..." Josh stammered quietly.
"Josh, you are a good guy. I know that you would really regret not taking part in this pregnancy," Anna quietly stated.
"Okay, then I will. I will act like this is my baby--"
"It is your baby," Anna interrupted.
"Jeez, let me finish. I was going to stay that I will take part of this. I will go full on daddy-o..." Josh said slowly. "You, me, and the baby..."
"Alright, then it is settled. We are in this together. I am depending on you to be there for me and our baby, no more of your childish crap," Anna stated sternly.
"Exactly, no more childish crap," Josh stated seriously.
"And we will figure out the rest as we go?" Anna half-questioned.
"Yes, and we will figure the rest out as we go," Josh confirmed.
Meanwhile, Alaina and Mara made their way to the club. They could hear the music blaring from outside which made both of them a little hesitant to enter. Still, they walked inside anyways.
"I'm not so sure about this," Mara stated with concern.
"Oh, it will be fine. Let's get some drinks, they'll help you loosen up!" Alaina chirped.
Mara made her way over to the bar and took a seat at one of the stools, Alaina followed suit.
"See, it's fine," Alaina said matter-of-factly as she plopped herself onto the seat.
"It'll be fine after I have a few drinks," Mara replied. And with that she ordered herself a Dizzy Lizzy and let herself sway to the blasting music.
"Already feeling better," Mara stated as she took a sip.
"See, I told you so. All you need is a little bit of fun," Alaina replied.
"Yeah, fun. Bartender, I'll take another!" Mara blurted as she downed the rest of her drink.
"And another!" Mara chirped as she tossed back her drink. "Keep them coming!" Mara yelled excitedly, "I can still remember him!" After downing several more drinks Mara finally decided it was time to start having some fun.
"Now I'm ready to PARRRRRTY!" Mara cheered as she pushed off the bar counter, stood up, and scanned the bar.
"It's time to do a little singing!" Mara yelled loudly. Alaina lightly laughed as her friend stumbled towards the stage.
Once on stage Mara fumbled around with the karaoke machine for a bit before finally deciding on the perfect song to sing, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper. Alaina found a seat at a table near the stage and prepared to watch her friend make a fool of herself. She had never actually heard Mara truly sing before in their 10 year friendship. She figured it couldn't be too great though considering the amount of drinks Mara had consumed. Alaina was wrong though. Mara was a great singer. She had the entire club whooping and hollering for her. She even seemed to be having a genuinely good time which was the entire point of the evening so Alaina chimed in with the others and cheered away as Mara sang. "Girrrrrls just wanna have fu-unnn, oh girlssss just wanna have fuuuuun!" Mara belted as she threw her hand into the air. In that moment she forgot everything that was going on with Josh, she actually felt good. It was refreshing. She actually couldn't remember the last time she felt this happy, and she didn't think it was because of all the drinks she had had earlier either, but those were probably helping at least a little. Alaina had gotten so wrapped up in watching Alaina sing that she actually jumped out of her chair when she felt someone tap her on the shoulder.
"Ahhhhh! Oh, Mrs. Vatelli, hello!" Alaina yelled. Immediately embarrassed, Alaina began to blush.
"Well hello Ms. Peterson," Mrs. Vatelli said blankly as she extended a hand. Alaina took the que and shook her hand firmly.
"I'm sorry about that, you startled me," Alaina explained.
"Yes, I could see that. I also see that you have returned from Bridgeport..." Mrs. Vatelli coldly stated.
"Oh, um, yes. I have returned. I'm sorry about that. That job just wasn't for me," Alaina quickly exclaimed.
"Very well, and I can mildly respect that. I actually came over here to talk to you about a new business proposition," Mrs. Vatelli confidently stated.
"Oh?" Alaina said nervously.
"Yes. It involves your friend there actually," Mrs. Vatelli said as she pointed to Mara on the stage.
"Mara? Oh...she isn't really into the business world..." Alaina mumbled.
"Business? Oh God, no. I want her to sing at the club as a regular. And if you can make that happen then I will make you the co-owner." Mrs. Vatelli confidently proposed.
"Oh, wow...that is a wonderful offer. I cannot speak for Mara, but I can honestly say that I would love that opportunity!" Alaina excitedly exclaimed.
"Now, don't get too ahead of yourself dear. It isn't a deal unless your friend agrees, then we can talk about your opportunities," Mrs. Vatelli stated with a flick of her hand.
"Oh yes, of course, I will talk to her tomorrow. I would do it tonight but I don't think that is the best plan, she has had quite a few drinks," Alaina rambled.
"Tomorrow it is then. This woman knows how to fire up a crowd, that is exactly what the Blue Note needs to draw in more people. I need you to make this happen," Mrs. Vatelli stated sternly.
"I'll do my very best, ma'am," Alaina nervously mumbled. Owning a business has always been a dream of hers, and a venue like this would be amazing. But, Alaina had no idea what Mara would think of the idea. She didn't even know if she was really into singing. Still, she was going to try to talk her into it.
"Very well," Mrs. Vatelli said with a tight smile.
"But if you cross me again there we be consequences for both you and your friend," Mrs. Vatelli stated with a stern look on her face.
"Excuse me?" Alaina nervously questioned.
"I don't want another Bridgeport situation. If I throw you a bone I expect you to run with it," Mrs. Vatelli coldly stated as she walked away.
"Well...that was, uh, scary..." Alaina thought to herself. As Mrs. Vatelli walked out the door Mara finished singing and started walking towards Alaina. She mouthed, "Let's go dance!" and pointed to the dance floor.
The ladies began dancing.
"Man, I really had fun singing," Mara chirped as she swayed to the music.
"You sounded really great, everyone seemed to love you!" Alaina cheerily replied.
"I even forgot about Josh while I was doing it. I just felt happy," Mara cheered and she pumped her arms to the beat of the music.
"How come you don't sing more then?" Alaina questioned as she wiggled her body to the base.
"I don't know, but I think I might start doing it more often!" Mara yelled as she spun in a circle with her arms in the air.
Alaina and Mara continued dancing with one another for another hour or so until the bar tender announced last call. Alaina called a taxi, Mara got one last drink, and the girls headed home both feeling a little bit better about themselves than when they had first arrived. "That was so much fun! Why don't we go out all of the time?" Alaina chirped as the girls entered the apartment.
"Well, because you just got back from Bridgeport and you used to have a really stuffy job that required you to be up early," Mara rambled.
"Oh...yeah, oops! Well, we can do it all the time now. I feel like superwoman. I can do anything!" Alaina cheered as she made a quick lap around the kitchen with her arms out in front of her like she was flying.
"We are so wonderful!" Alaina cheered as she clapped her hands. Mara thought deeply in trying to remember how many drinks Alaina had had herself that night, but alas, she had no recollection.
"Yeah, I know Superwoman. We are great. But I think it's time that we both head off to bed or we're both going to be feeling super awful tomorrow," Mara half-joked.
"Nah, I'm not ready for bed. I'm too jazzed up, but you go ahead. I'll see you in the morning. Well, no, probably not morning, but maybe in the afternoon," Alaina laughed.
"Alright, goodnight. Thanks for taking me out, I needed it! Love you, Lainey," Mara chimed as she walked up the stairs.
"Anytime Mar, love you, too!" Alaina replied.
When Alaina heard Mara's bedroom door close upstairs she quietly opened the front door and stepped into the hallway. All of the drinks that she had consumed were telling her to go next door and give Josh a piece of her mind, so that is exactly what she did.
Alaina stumbled across the lawn, into Josh and Anna's building, and called Josh's apartment on the call box.
"Hey, Josh, get down here. I have some things to say to ya!" Alaina barked into the speaker.
"Alaina? Have you been drinking? Oh boy, be right down," Josh replied. And with a beep, a buzz, and some footsteps Josh arrived in the lobby.
"Well hello Mr. Mailor, where's that baby of yours?" Alaina mumbled.
"Oh boy, um, the baby isn't born yet. And why are you here? It's 3:30AM!" Josh sassed.
"3:30? Then, why are you still in your clothes?" Alaina asked, confused.
"Uh, I, um, haven't gone to bed yet. I've been doing a lot of thinking," Josh murmured.
"Thinking about Mara? Oh wait, you already forgot about her!" Alaina yelled loudly.
"Be quiet, people live here! And what are you talking about? I just saw Mara today," Josh replied.
"I don't care about the people that live here, I care about Mara. And that is more than you can say, huh, Mr. Mailor!" Alaina rambled.
"What are you talking about Alaina?" Josh questioned, genuinely confused.
"Josh! I'm talking about Mara. You let her run away today, you didn't try and stop her. You didn't call, you didn't care!" Alaina screamed as she threw her hands up in frustration.
"I had other things to think about, I'm sure she has already told you, but I'm having a baby!" Josh retorted.
"Yeah, I know, a baby. A baby with Anna. Anna and the baby. But what about Mara, Mara and you? She loves you! I don't know why, but she does," Alaina rambled as her head began to spin. Josh froze. He had been so caught up in how he felt about the baby situation that he had not even thought about how Mara must be feeling.
"What do I do? I'm so stupid. God, I'm stupid!" Josh exclaimed.
"You go next door and you tell Mara that. Oh, and you also tell her that you love her, because you do. And apologize for being so stupid. That should cover it. Maybe kiss her, go wherever the moment brings you," Alaina slurred.
"Right, I'm stupid, apologize, tell her I love her, and make a move, got it!" And with that, Josh ran out the door, across the lawn, up the stairs, and through the door of Mara's apartment.
Mara had come back downstairs to drink a glass of water in hopes of easing tomorrow's headache. Just as she had finished drinking it, she heard the door open. She spun around to find none other than Josh. "What are you doing here?" Mara questioned.
"I needed to talk to you," Josh replied softly.
"Talk about what? You are having a baby with another woman, that does not leave room for me," Mara stated sadly.
"I'm not here to talk about the baby or Anna, I'm here to talk about us," Josh whispered.
"Us?" Mara asked softly.
"Yeah, us. The conversation we were supposed to have earlier today," Josh smiled.
"Let me get this straight, you came over at 3:40AM to talk about us?" Mara half-joked.
"Yes," Josh said seriously.
"That doesn't change the fact that you are having a baby," Mara stated coldly.
"I am not here to talk about that. I am here to talk about us. I was stupid today. I was so concerned with my feelings that I didn't even think to consider how you were feeling. I want to say that I am sorry for not being a better boyfriend, you deserve so much better," Josh stated softly.
"Boyfriend?" Mara asked with a slight tilt of her head.
"Yes, boyfriend," Josh confirmed. Mara smiled, the butterflies from earlier that day started to return.
"I was stupid to not chase after you today. I want to be with you, Mara. Baby or not, I want you to be my girl," Josh smiled.
Josh took a step closer to Mara.
"You are so special to me. You are the only girl that I have ever been able to picture a future with. I am so stupid for ever ending this relationship. I was afraid of getting hurt. But now I know that I don't have to worry about that because you love me," Josh said softly.
"And...I love you," Josh said slowly and he pulled Mara in for a kiss. Mara had been waiting for this moment for three months now. It felt amazing to hear those worlds and to be in Josh's arms. In that moment it didn't matter that he was having a baby with someone else. They were together and that was all that she needed. "I love you, I love you, I loooove you, Mara!" Josh cheered as Mara let out a small laugh.
"You are the best thing that has ever happened to me, I will never let you go again," Josh whispered.
Mara embraced Josh's head and gave him a soft kiss. Everything felt so perfect.
"I'm going to marry you one day Mara Shale, just you wait and see," Josh whispered as he grabbed Mara, hoisted her over his shoulder, and carried her upstairs to her bedroom.
And that's a wrap for Chapter 3 of Forever Changing. What an emotional roller coaster. I can barely keep up with these characters! ;)

As always, I hope you enjoyed, and feel free to leave any feedback, comments, questions, or concerns that you may have. Thanks for reading! <3

I'll have the next chapter out as soon as possible! :)
