Brooklyn placed her hand on his shoulders.
Brooklyn: I do remember those times.
A small smile came on his face as he moved closer to her.

Brooklyn placed her hand on his shoulders.
Brooklyn: I do remember those times.
A small smile came on his face as he moved closer to her.
Then, she moved her hand away.
Brooklyn: But that was back then Aj. When we were young. When all I wanted to do was be with you. But that's changed.
Aj: Brooke
He held her hand in his.
Brooke: No Aj. I can't do this. Not now, not with you.
She slowly moved her hand
Brooklyn: It was so much for me when you left. You didn't just leave me. You-
She dropped her words.
Brooklyn: I married Travis. He loves me and I love him. If you can't handle that then I would suggest you just go. And save us all the hurt later.
She walked out of the room leaving him to himself.
The next day Brooklyn barely spoke a word to Aj. She was not going to tell Travis. She knew it would hurt him to know what Aj had done. Besides, she knew she could handle him again if he tried. Aj: Good morning everyone
Everyone in the kitchen had greeted him, everyone except Brooklyn who pretended she didn't hear him as she banged the dishes louder.
He sat with the rest of the family to begin eating.
Travis and Aj went out for some fresh air that afternoon with Sophia. He couldn't stop thinking about what he had done the previous day so instead of playing around he sat on the a nearby bench and watch Travis and Sophia play.
Aj: You are one luck man Travis
He told himself.
He couldn't help but feel guilty for what he had done with Brooklyn. She didn't deserve that and he knew it. He sat in his bed that evening thinking to himself. Then he heard the sound of pounding coming from down the hall. He pushed the cracked door open and there was Brooklyn. She was chizeling away at a big rock. He could tell it was in the beginning stages. He looked over at her once more. There was a glow along her exposed skin, small beads of sweat from her hammering the sculpture. He walked closer.
Aj: I see old habits never die.
He didn't get a response again. But he knew she heard him because she paused just as he spoke.
Aj: Look, I I don't know how to say this other than I am sorry. I'm sorry I was being selfish and talked to you like I did the other day. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I just wanted to..... He looked on the floor as if to find a better answer.
Aj: I just missed you Brooklyn. And I thought that the moment I got back here that we could pick up. But I see I can't.
Brooklyn finally raised from her sculpture.
Brooklyn: You really upset me Aj.
Aj: I know. And I never want to do that to you. Stay right here.
Before she could say anything else, Aj had left the room.
He came back into the room with his guitar. Brooklyn looked at him a little confused.
Aj: Spending time here has given me some good inspiration. I've already written 4 songs in the last 2 days. I haven't been this good since we were.....well for a long time.
He began to play his guitar. The melodic sounds filled the room as he ran his fingers down the strings of the guitar. He would look up at Brooklyn every now and then to see her face. Did she like it? What did she think about it?
When he was finished, he placed the guitar down next to him.
He saw her smile again.
Aj: So you like it?
Brooklyn: I do. It was so great.
Aj: I've been feeling really good about being here in town. Giving me a lot of motivation to write and there isn't a lot of pressure to do so.
Aj: I just wanted to say thank you for letting me stay here. And I was wrong for taking advantage of that.
There was a short pause between them both. Brooklyn soon broke the silence.
Brooklyn: Well I have to get back to my craft.
Aj: Yeah well, I'll leave you to do what you do best.
Aj left out the room. Brooklyn followed him out. She smiled when he looked back at her again. Then when he walked out, she shook her head again.
Brooklyn: What are you doing girl?
Later on that day Aj walked to Sophia's room where she was getting her room in order.
Aj: Hey Sophie. I got this note that I can't quite understand but I am guessing it is from you.
Sophia: It's your invitation to my tea party.
Aj: Oh. A tea party. I thought this is what it said.
He looked again at the crayon colored card.
Aj: Am I too late.
Sophia: No, you're early. The rest of the guests have not came.
She pointed at the other dolls in the room.
Sophia: But you are not dressed for a tea party. Where is your suit and tie? My daddy always comes to my parties with a suit and tie.
Aj: I'm sorry I didn't realize I was to dress for the occasion. I figured if the guests were not dressed up then I didn't have to either.
He picked up the small teddy bear that she had sat down in the chair. He began to talk in a high voice to imitate her teddy bear.
Aj: What do you think about my outfit?
Aj: I think it is fine Aj (using the teddy)
Sophia began to laugh.
Sophia: My daddy said you were very funny.
Aj: I think I am a little bit.
Sophia: Is it true you and my daddy grew up together.
Aj: We did. He was my best friend. Still is.
Sophia: Mommy says she knew you both too.
Aj: She did. She was also my best friend. I care about them both.
Sophia: My daddy told me all about the times when you were little like me.
Aj: I hope not everything, we were not nice boys at times.
Sophia laughed again. She motioned for him to come and sit at the tiny tea table and the both of them started talking and drinking the juice she brought for them.
That weekend, Brooklyn had taken Sophia to go visit family leaving Aj and Travis to themselves. Aj walked into the kitchen to where Travis was fixing on the stove.
Aj: Need help?
Travis: Darn stove. I need to get a new one. Been fighting with this thing for months.
Aj: I don't know how you do it man?
Travis: It's nothing, just need to go to Best Depot for a new one.
Aj: Naw man. I mean family man and all. Growing up you were the last one to talk about having a wife and kids. Now look at you. I can't help buy envy your life.
Travis looked cautiously at Aj.
Travis: Well, I always wanted a family. Just not as soon as everyone else did. Playing football was not going to be my career, you knew that.
Aj: Yeah I know. But sometimes I look at it all and think I had it made, then I come back here and see I didn't.
Travis: Geez man. You make it seem as though I got it all and you got nothing. What happened out in California.
Aj: Nothing. Nothing worth talking about. I just thought that my life was going to be different.
Travis: So did I. But things change. For the better or for the worst.
Aj: Yeah, well don't take it for granted.
Travis: Where is all this coming from A.j?
Aj: I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate all you and Brooklyn have been doing for me. Taking me in your home and letting me stay here. You two have been good to me.
Travis: You would have done the same for me man. Now stop with all the gushy talk and let's watch some football. There is too much estrogen in this room now.
They both laughed.
But Aj words did strike a cord with Travis. He felt uneasy about what his friend was hiding. Was it wise for him to let Aj into his home, around his wife that was once his? Around his daughter. They are best friends, womb to tomb, and there was love between the three of them.
Something just didn't feel right.
