Once again I want to thank you ALL for reading this story! ( makes me all fuzzy inside.. hehehe)

Enjoy! Muah.
Previously on “The Bachelor…”: Kevin forced Danielle’s hand and ordered her to make a choice that seemed as silly as impossible to her.

You want me to choose between the two of you? I repeated, bewildered by this ridiculous situation. I couldn’t believe that Kevin was acting this childish. “This is absurd, Kevin. Grow up! I am going home.” I ended, making my way out of the mansion.
“ Well I guess you’re fired.” He declared objectively.

Good Heavens, Somebody holds me. I blew a fuse. Astonished ( and not in a good way) by what had just happened, I angrily turned back to him:
” Is this what this is all about? A random game where you think you can just play me or gamble with my job, just because I don’t kiss up to you? I worked really hard to get where I am today, and you cant…

- Actually you didn’t, he interrupted. You just read the add in a newspaper and you ran up here because you desperately needed a job. And I gave you one. Now I am done with you. You can leave.
What an indignation! Kevin’s actions were based on the fact that he resented me, and this wasn’t fair. I didn’t do a thing to deserve this. And seemingly that was the problem, I didn’t do a thing, I chose neither one of them.

I started to rethink of what Jackie had told me earlier today, about Kevin having a thing for me. Maybe she was right, and maybe I knew it all along, but I willingly chose to ignore it, for some reasons that were still unknown to me.

Looking at him straight in the eyes, I wished he took back what he had just said, but he didn’t. And from there all I could feel was disappointment.
I made my exit on a cab that drove me home, it was more or less easy to get one at this hour of the evening. And even if it hadn't been, it was my only option anyways since my car was sent back to reparations, and I wasn’t going to ask for a ride to a Boss that had just fired me cold-heartedly. Jackie jumped right in through the door of the house in a jovial mood, visibly holding back on some exciting news she couldn’t wait to share. That would make one of us only. “You’re looking at the newest music Director of the Community School of The Gifted!” She screamed, gladly. I could see the light in her eyes. “ I just got promoted!”

She shouted lively, with the exhilarating enthusiasm of a high school student going to college for the first time and moving out of his parents ‘shadow.
Wow, Jackie. That’s… great news, I’m really happy for you! I managed to mumble, turning away from her to disguise my sadness. Was I happy for my best friend? Yes I was, but needless to say I wasn’t really in the most thrilling mood. Besides, my “losing my job” wasn’t really much of an achievement compared to Jackie’s mind blowing promotion. Moving towards her I held her tight in my arms and hugged her. Tonight was Jackie’s night, and I didn’t want to spoil it for her. This was not a good time to tell her. I hoped she won't suspect a thing. Almost a week had passed and I was still keeping my secret from Jackie. As the days went by, it was harder and harder to tell her. And her always coming home from work with amazing news of how her co-workers praised her knowledge of music wasn’t helping my situation.
Eventually I became a little jealous of her. All these years I had always been the bread-winner of the household and I was fine with that, I like to feel needed, in charge. I could set the ground rules and others would follow. Now that the roles had reversed, I felt like a good for nothing.
My job wasn’t the only thing I was missing. Looking at Kevin’s house keys resting on the living room table incessantly reminded me of him. His jokes, his puffed up attitude, or when he would strike a pose right after exercise just to see how big his muscles had grown! I even longed for his teasing, the things he would say or do just to have me looking at him or giving him grief. I couldn’t help but replay in my head the good times I had over there at his villa. “Your Mom called.” Jackie declared one afternoon, as I had just returned from grocery shopping.

Upon hearing Jackie's voice my heart skipped a beat, not only because she scared me ( I didn’t know she would be back from work so early that day and by extension I might have had to explain why I was home too ), but also because of what she had just said.
“Mom? What did she want?” I inquired, taking a seat next to Jackie and trying to keep my calm despite the inward panic.

- She said she wanted to come over for dinner, just to see how you were doing. To “ reconnect..”, yes, that’s the word she used.

- Reconnect? I repeated to myself, confused. That’s not the kind of word that would be part of Rose Capalan’s vocabulary! What the heck could she be up to now? I hope she doesn’t have cancer or something… “And what did you say?” I continued, alarmed at to where that conversation possibly headed.
“Well, I told her that wouldn’t be a problem for you, and given that you got a new job it would even be a better opportunity to impress her! And I was even thinking, maybe we should invite Kevin over!”
Kevin!? My brain instantly screamed “No!!” and this for the reason that you already know ( but that Jackie doesn’t). I pouted: No Jackie, I don’t think this is a good idea.

- Why not? She insisted. This would really make your mom see differently about you, you know! You have a real job, a real boss, an apartment of your own, etc. You're self-sufficient. I am positive she will be proud of that!

I had to come up with a lie as quick as possible to explain why Kevin couldn’t come to that “ tricky” family dinner.

- Well, he’s out of town!
"Really!? Jackie continued. So… if he’s out of town, where have you been going to work for the past week then?" Geez, detective Jackie, Let it go! Okay, I had to make my story hold. “Well… actually he travelled today, that’s why I didn’t go to work; and he’s supposed to be back tomorrow but I’m afraid he might be too tired from his trip and..

- That’s a deal! Don’t worry Danielle, he would love to be there, and you would love to have him there too, we both know that…She teased.

“Holy cow! she’s definitely up to something. I don’t know if I can do this anymore.”
Mother Capalan coming to visit was no coincidence. My mom wasn’t the kind of person to just do things for the sake of doing them, so she was certainly working an angle. Even though I had no idea what her mischievous plan could be, I was determined not to give her any reason to criticize me some more. I grabbed a cooking book from the shelf, vowing to make her a dinner she would never forget. I am quite a great cook myself. How did this happen? Well, let’s just say that when I was younger and still working my way through life, trying to figure out who I wanted to be ( after ditching medical school of course), I did a couple of internships, grasping a handful of skills along the way; among which the cooking skill. My favorite recipe was key lime pie, which is also one of my favorite dessert ( the other one being OMG! ice-cream.) I love that pie recipe so dearly that I can even bake it with my eyes closed. My mom is a vegetarian, so all meals had to be cooked accordingly. So tonight we were all about to " Go Green!". After dropping the autumn salad on the serving table, I layered the ratatouille in a cooking tray which I then inserted in the oven. Alternating all the ingredients with green peppers, and dressing it with several layers of Heinz tomato sauce always gives it a delectable and colorful appearance; the latter urging me to jump on it as soon as it’s out of the oven. Next I gathered all the ingredients for my fish and chips recipe which was ready in no time. At last, we were all set and ready for dinner.

My mother examined the well-dressed dining table with due care, seemingly looking for a flaw, whatever it might be.

"Impressive." She finally said, making herself comfortable on the seat that I had carefully reserved for her. I inwardly clapped for myself, somehow proud of having blown her mind.
“So how much did that bottle of champagne cost you?” She asked sarcastically. Wow. Too much for wishing to start this dinner on a positive note. Why does she always have to do that?

“Come on Danielle, I’m joking! -She then corrected, seeing that my face had turned from a smile to a grin. – I’m sure your new salary allows you to afford such refined things. I was clueless as to whether that statement was supposed to be a compliment or a bad joke. Either way, I was still kind of apprehensive as to why she would care.
Dinner was somehow ironic and sarcastic, with Mom sending me a low blow every now and then. Though by now I am supposed to be used to it, somehow I just expected this time to be different. Given that I have an apartment that I pay MYSELF, a job ( supposedly) that I didn’t have before and for which she constantly used to criticize me. But it seemed like whatever I do, she would never be satisfied. “So where is that Boss of yours, I was really looking forward to see him tonight, you know. Being a personal Assistant doesn’t sound much like a lifetime career, and for you to be stuck on someone’s back for this long, he better be a catch.” She mocked. " So how does he call you again? PA?" That was it. Once again, my Mom had pushed my button. I just cannot understand why she always has something negative to say about me or the things I do! I worked hard to get this dinner planned, to satisfy her and yet she seems not to be interested in having a real relationship! To hell with the lying, she wasn’t even worth me trying harder and lie to her anymore! “well let me tell you something Mom! The truth, this time!” I stated angrily, ready to reveal everything to her and be done with that!

- Fine, I’m listening! My Mom retaliated, rising up from her chair as if she had been waiting so long to humiliate me.
“He’s on vacation!” Jackie jumped in, out of nowhere. I looked at her straight, trying to figure what she was doing. Her boss was supposed to be back today, but his flight got delayed, and Danielle didn’t want to tell you because of the way you would have reacted, and the way you treat her! As a mother, you should be more supportive of your daughter’s choices, and not criticize her so much.”

I froze on my seat, not knowing what was going to happen next. Jackie stood up to my mother in a way I never could. Mom kept looking at Jackie fearlessly, then she pushed back her chair and exited.
“I am no longer welcome here.” She headed to the door.” I didn’t know what to say. Jackie stood up from her chair without saying a word. As I looked at her, I realized she knew. She knew everything of the lie I tried to conceal.

“ Why did you do it? I asked her.

- When were you going to tell me? She replied with a question.

-Jackie… ( I sighed) I am sorry for keeping this from you, I should have told you that earlier and…

-Just shut up. She ordered.
“Come here. She dragged me towards her and gave me a hug. Don’t you ever keep a secret from me again.

- I promise!

- And forget about him, he’s not worth it."

I didn't say a word.

" Promise?" Jackie insisted, noticing my silence
“ Of course. I will.”

Those were my words, but it suddenly felt like it would be easier said than done.

Well, I'm glad Jackie stood up for Danielle, even though she knew the truth ... because I was seriously about to slap Danielle's head off! But seriously, Danielle ... catering job? Head chef of a restaurant? C'mon girl, you can do it!
