This can’t be a coincidence. I don’t believe in those anymore, in fact. I say, “Theodore. Why are you here—I mean, why did you think Marisa Roberts would be here? At Pilot Hunter’s house. My Pilot Hunter’s house.”
My gaze turns—a column of pictures is before my eyes.
Is that—Dawn and Ace and Markus and Lukas. And Pilot. All grown-up. Without me. Rufa attempts to comfort me, but my mind keeps churning—
“Uh, hey? Queen?” I look to him, “What?” The word came out harsher than I intended. He shrinks, “I was just saying—Marisa didn’t really tell me much, just that she wanted my help to bring in this guy, your Pilot Hunter. Plus, she promised I’d get to meet the Good Doctor. He’s my hero, y’know.”
I show my teeth at him. “And you’d just go along, without knowing anything?”
Shrugging, “Sure. It was a little weird at first—we usually tell each other everything, but not this time. Something about plausible deniability and complicated Supernatural plots.”
I don’t understand, “So my brother and my son’s girlfriend are working together to abduct the love of my—Pilot Hunter, I mean. Pilot Hunter.”

“I guess that’s where the complicated Supernatural plots comes in.”
I turn and look at him, and I laugh.
He smiles at me, so I stop.
Clearing his throat, “Uh, speaking about complicated Supernaturals—hey, your son isn’t around, is he? Marisa keeps putting off us meeting, and I can’t help but to wonder—what’s wrong with this guy. Y’know?”
“Right. Uh. Right.”
A shot of pleasure fills me, and I know that Rufa is enjoying this.
Theo mumbles, “So. Speaking of not knowing. Marisa’s whereabouts. I think I may just visit the ol’ police station and fill one of those missing person reports, huh? ‘Cause, actually, I’m starting to freak out—she won’t answer her phone; it goes straight to voice mail, and she had the keys to the car, so I’m stuck walking, and you don’t suppose she’s dead, do you? Pilot Hunter isn’t a vicious serial killer, is he? Please say no.”
I open my mouth to respond, but my phone rings.
Saved by the Bell, Evelyn, or should I say, saved by the ring?
