Not a Fairy Tale I

Not a Fairy Tale I Once upon a time in a place far, far away, the Island of Manuiu was celebrating the union of their princess. It has been years since the land had a royal wedding, and it seemed as though the entire island was overjoyed with this special occasion. Although the land is run by the Manuiu Government the royal family still hold some power. Princess Daisy Tupou was the last heir to the royal family. She was the only child of her parents. Because she was a female, it was traditional for her to take on a husband before she took the throne. As tradition, she was arranged to be married on her 18th birthday. The wedding was set for 3 years later after a long engagement and negotiation from both families. Her Prince Charming was Duce Vicente Pago. He was 5 years her senior, served in the Tonga military and family made their living in the cane industry. All of Manuiu watched as the two of them exchanged their wedding vows and announced their loyalty to their marriage and country. The bells rang as the priest announced them as husband and wife. As with all royal weddings, the celebration last for one week. On the final date the couple left for their month long honeymoon. It was there time to get to know each other and fall in love before returning back to Manuiu. During their time as husband and wife, the two lived in one of the family's estate. Named "The Princess Palace", it was said that the house was built for Daisy by the king when she was born. As the years passed, the couple stayed strong. They followed their royal duty by traveling to other countries, making appearances, and being the face of Manuiu. A strong marriage in the eyes of the people, meant a strong ruling. Just after 4 years the land celebrated again. It was the birth of Vicente and Daisy's son, Vance. The people of Manuiu felt the gods were looking upon them. Not only was there a wedding but also a male heir. Prince Vance Tupou Pago. Years later-------------------------------------

The Island of Manuiu continued to prosper. The couple generated a lot of media for the land. And in doing so, brought more imports and tourists.
Princess Daisy and Prince Vicente were celebrating their 15years anniversary. Just before the festivities, they stood outside the balcony and greeted the Manu's. It was tradition for them to greet the people before their celebrations. The couple stood waving to their people as the crowd below waved back and cheered. The crowd began to cheer louder. This time for Vance. The crowd wanted to see the little prince as well. Daisy kept smiling and waving to the crowd. She tried to speak between her teeth.
Daisy: Where is Vance?
Vicente: In the back.
Daisy: I thought we said he was going to make an appearance.
Vicente: No. He wanted to play with Don.
Daisy: Don?
Vicente: Okay now. I am Captain and you are my matey. You have to do what I say.
Don: We always do what you say.
Vicente: That's because I am the oldest. And the prince. Everyone does what I say.
Don: Oh alright.
Dontrez Pago, was the nephew of Vicente. The boy lost both his parents at a young age and Vicente felt it was his responsibility as the godfather to care for his family. He joined the royal family when he was just a toddler. Vicente was always stern with the two boys. But mostly to Vance. He was training him to be king one day and while his mother gave him love, his father gave him lessons. But Don was different. Princess Daisy was not as loving to Don and so Vicente played both roles to him. And the more attention Vicente gave to Don, the more she resented letting the boy join the family. For the afternoon, the Pago family took family photos. The photographers were delighted to see the family and took pictures as they played and laughed with each other.
Photographer: Where is Dontrez?
Daisy: This is a family photo. Don is inside playing.
Photographer: Well, we should see the entire family. Can he come as well?
As the young boy arrived, Daisy tried to keep a smile for the cameras. Soon she grew tired and excused herself to the house, leaving Vicente with Don and Vance.
Don: All this for you and Auntie.
Vicente: Yes.
Don: Will this happen to Vance as well?
Vicente: Of course. This is what we do. We travel, smile, kiss babies.
Don: I'm glad that will never be me. I just want to travel.
After the photographers left, Vance and Don stayed in the back and finished playing.
Don: Why do I have to do all the work.
Vance: Because I'm the oldest and I said so. Now do it.
They continued to play on the ship.
Vance: Ahoy there. I see something in the distance.
The young girl pushed through the gate and ran towards the boys.
Vance: Someone is trying to board the ship. Quick stop them!
Don: I can't do that.
Vance: You can and you will. This is a no girls allowed zone.
Don: Since when.
Vance: Since today.
Roxanna stood in front of the play ship.
Roxanna: Please Don.
Vance: I said NO!
Roxanna began to pout. Don hated seeing his best friend upset.
Don: Okay.
Vance: I said no Don!
But Don ignored Vance and let her on. It was the only time he didn't do what his cousin said.
Vance: Fine. But only this time. Next time, you do as I say.
Dontrez and Roxanna were best friends. Her family moved to Manuiu from New Zealand when she was an infant. Her father was a big politician and served in the parliament. Her parents were friends with the Pagos and so she was always welcome to visits. Her and Don went to the same school and were in the same grade. The two of them were more close than Don and Vance.
Roxanna: Why do you always do what Vance says?
Don: Because it's easier to do what he says or have him tell on me.
Roxanna: But you don't do anything.
Don: Exactly. But Auntie will take his side and punish me. It is just better to be nice than make him mad.
Roxanna: I don't think i will ever like him.
Later that evening-----------------------------

In the early part of the night the guests sat outside in the garden for dinner. It was a gorgeous sky and the weather was just above a cool breeze. As it became later a few of the guests began to leave and Daisy and Vicente got ready for the after party.
It was time for the kids to go to bed as the adults stayed later. Roxanna walked with Don towards the house to say goodbye.
The two gave their secret handshake.
Don: See you tomorrow?
Roxanna: Same time. Only then we can tie Vance up and tape his mouth shut.
Don: You know I can't do that.
Roxanna: You can't but I can.
She heard her parents call for her.
Roxanna: Gotta go. Bye
Don: See ya.
They hugged again.
When the family was not traveling, they enjoyed just spending alone time in the home. Well, Daisy enjoyed quiet time at home. The boys simply did as they were told. Don sat at the piano playing a tune that was in his head. He was considered a child prodigy and could repeat any tune he heard. Even Daisy had to admit, he played beautifully. She paid for his lessons and when needed he would play for the guests Vance sat playing chess with his father. As he became better at the game, Vicente would no longer let him win. He had to earn it. Unfortunately, the boy hated to lose.
Vance: I don't want to play anymore.
Vicente: It's because you are losing. You have to become a good loser before you can be a better winner. Now think. You must always be 5 steps ahead of your opponent. No what they are going to do before they do it.
Vance sat with his arms crossed and upset that his father was making him play.
Daisy sat on the other side of the room, writing in her journal. She kept a jdiary of her life and wanted to some day write a book. Until then she would continue to write, and keep her secrets locked away.
