When our world was still full of magic, there lived a princess named Asphodel. She was an only offspring to a royal union and was initially thought to be a much-needed symbol of peace between nations. That was until her mother – the Queen of human nation – disappeared without a trace. As tragic as it was for the little princess, people still found entertainment in gossiping. Some said the Queen ran off with her secret lover, others thought the warlock King himself got rid of her to marry another. When the King finally remarried all the gossips were long forgotten.

But fate wasn’t on his side yet again.
The King caught a deadly disease and died soon after his second child had been born leaving a heavy crown to his oldest. And that’s there things for Asphodel went from bad to even worse.
Asphodel’s stepmother saw her as a half-breed unworthy to be a ruler. The witch wanted to make sure the crown would eventually land on a true prince’s head. She placed the Inamatus curse on the young Queen until her brother came off age to take over his rightful position as a king.

And so the gossips began about the unluckiest princess of all – the hybrid Queen with a cursed heart.

“I prefer Odel,” echoed between the lonely walls of her royal prison.
Everyone kept their distance from the cursed Queen. Everyone but one young man. Reuven wasn’t just some adventurous warlock seeking a challenge. But he did feel an unexplainable pull towards the Queen and her tragic fate. In some ways they were similar, Reuven was one of a kind as well. People gossiped about him and his family as long as he could remember. And sometimes his loving mothers weren’t enough to soothe the ache he felt for being different. He kept visiting Asphodel’s castle in secret as she played the piano so marvelously… you could sense longing and loneliness in every piece she played, in every press of her finger. It spoke to him like nothing else in the entire world.

Every night Asphodel waited for his return the moment he left, despite fear crippling her heart. She feared the curse would destroy them both.
Asphodel knew she was being selfish… allowing him to come back time and time again. She hoped he’d be strong enough to break the curse. She saw love in his eyes and desired to feel the same. To be lifted by something so pure and beautiful. But she just couldn’t return his feelings, as hard as she tried, the curse weighing her heart wouldn’t give in. One night Reuven leaned in, and she let him hoping a kiss would change something. And she did feel magic pulling at them almost shattering the ground beneath their feet.

But it was not what she expected.
As she looked at him, she saw his body surrounded by magical flame. It was close to her body as well, but it didn’t burn. At least not her. Reuven cried in pain as the flame grew stronger, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. “Odel,” he breathed out her name before falling to the ground as the flames died down.

She knelt beside him, taking his suddenly cold hand to her heart. She was trembling so much that even his body shook. But he wouldn’t open his eyes. And his pulse was barely there…

“It’s going to be alright, Reuven. Your mothers are the most powerful witches anyone’s ever heard of… they’ll know what to do,” she kept saying more to herself than him as she waited for the witches to come. But all was not alright. The witches came fast upon getting the urgent message. Yet it took them one glance at their only child laying lifelessly to lose their mind. Their anger seemed to have caused a storm outside and they unleashed another one just for Asphodel. They couldn’t lift the curse from Reuven, and they blamed Asphodel for taking their beloved child from them. So they put yet another curse on the hybrid Queen as a revenge.

“You shall lay dead forever locked in this devious body of yours. And only your spirit will walk once a year on this day unnoticed. You’ll see them forget you, you’ll see everyone move on, but you will rot and never feel the wind or sun on your skin again. You will pay for taking our son from us!”
From one curse to another the Queen was now sure fate was just not on her side. Once a year her spirit left her body to roam the world, but it gave little satisfaction if any at all. She was forever trapped.

Centuries passed, the witches kept her body hidden. Her royal family was long forgotten and the world had changed. The humans took over, magical creatures were practically extinct. But the powerful witches still wouldn’t give in.
