Welcome to Manderly Hall. It is so nice of you to drop by. If you have been influenced by the exterior and are expecting to experience an 18th century lifestyle, then you will be - sadly - disappointed. Nothing could be further from fact as you will discover if you are not put off by needing to readjust your expectations at such a late stage. Mind you, no one was under any obligation to acquaint you with the details - you have come of your own free will after all - so stiffen that upper lip a bit and let us proceed.
In it's glory days, Manderly hall was the principal residence and family seat of Sir Augustus Manderly, 3rd Earl of Addington in the County of Sussex and a proactive member of the House of Commons. The Earl was a meticulous record keeper and a good deal of the information which survives is attributable to his diligence.
Earl Addington was also an efficient landowner and the estate flourished during his lifetime. Tragically, Sir Augustus Manderly met his Maker at the relatively early [by today's standards] age of 55 having been severely injured in a fall at the Hunt, which - along with it's culmination, The Hunt Ball- always marked the change of seasons at Manderly Hall. The Earl was survived by a large family - 6 sons and 3 daughters - 2 sons, 1 daughter and a wife having predeceased him. Alas, as was the case with many landed families, the eldest son, Helbert, was not as interested in the land as his forebears although he began expanding the ancestral home and is credited with the form we see today. Building works were largely uncompleted, when Helbert took his own life, unable to withstand the public humiliation of being dunned for the builder's charges and other debts.
Manderly Hall suffered a period of great instability of ownership for over a hundred years following the 'abdication' of the last direct descendent of the Manderly line in around 1897 - Rupert was a gentle soul who was not equipped to deal with all the problems that the Hall had accumulated over the generations, so he, perhaps wisely, sold what little remained of his birthright and entered a seminary. Interestingly, he became Bishop of Addington in his declining years.
Those were the dark days at Manderly Hall. A succession of ambitious but not particularly practical extensions and renovations were carried out over a period of, perhaps, 60 years, until in the latter part of 2005, a wise investor discovered the almost derelict Hall - vacant after the current incumbent had done a moonlight flit ahead of HIS creditors - saw it's potential and acquired ownership at a much discounted price. This was advantageous as it permitted an immediate start on the long task of bringing Manderly Hall back to life. As the decline was of long standing , so too was the renewal.
The finished 'product' is an eclectic mix - not focussed on any particular era or style. There are 3 double bedrooms and a twin, with the master suite occupying the top floor exclusively - the double rooms have ensuites. A long gallery gives access to the wings on ground and first floors. On the ground floor, one wing contains the eating and entertaining amenities and the other consists of the great room and reading corner. The ground floor is totally open plan, but the upper floors are more conservative.
The agent has taken photographs of sections of the Hall, and these are displayed for your information.
If you are quite ready, let us now begin our tour of the new Manderly Hall.
